"Bowie: the Berlin years in words and pictures."
David Bowie spent much of the years 1976 – 1978 in Berlin. It was a difficult time in Bowie’s life: he was broke, going through a difficult divorce, and hooked on drugs. Nevertheless, as illuminated in this graphic novel, those years in Berlin were particularly creative and important.
Bowie worked with his friend Iggy Pop on his albums The Idiot and Lust for Life and recorded his own iconic albums Heroes and Low during this time.
In words and pictures, this book captures the unique atmosphere of Berlin at that time, the hedonism, tension, defiant creativity, and shows how Bowie used this to renew his art and find peace, indeed his own lust for life.
Quotes from contemporary interviews with Bowie give readers insight into his thinking, but the striking illustrations make this book special, chapters almost colour coded in purples, blues and rich yellow, the comic book format reflecting the chaotic urgency of those days.

A musician, a visionary, a shapeshifter - David Bowie was an artist of reinvention who was many things to many people, including himself. Through legendary personas, such as Ziggy Stardust and the Thin White Duke, his fearless individuality inspired many. But where did the real Bowie exist and what journey did he make to rediscover himself?

The illustrative syle is perfect for the graphic novel format, though not always entirely accurate to the people being depicted.... Read Full Review
