A dream house turns into a nightmare in this unsettling read that will make you glad your neighbours aren’t that bad. Feeling unsettled in your home is the worst. When your space is no longer your sanctuary. That is the case for our narrator, who introduces himself as Mark before recounting the strange and unsettling encounters he experienced when he moved into his new home.
The plot of the story is quite unsettling, surrounded by watchful, quirky neighbours and strange visitors. The most simple things become fraught with difficulty and objections as an untrusting atmosphere permeates everything. But in the age of video camera doorbells and everyday surveillance, the line between legitimate concern and paranoia is blurry.
Such an odd word is an atmospheric novella. I feel the focus of this story was on creating an unsettled feeling that lingers after the final page, rather than a thriller that offers a definitive resolution. This novella could leave you glad of the neighbours you have, or maybe you'll be considering what else is happening behind closed doors and curtains.
