"Absolutely fascinating, not only do you venture into the history of the dog unit within UK police forces, but also some of the individual dogs and their stories. "
I have fallen in love with this book and the individual dogs highlighted within. Author Andy Boot sets out the story of the police dog, and it surprised me to learn just how much of a recent addition formal dog units have been. The history is fascinating, from the somewhat haphazard beginnings through to the increasingly knowledgeable breeding kennels and schools.
Certain forces triumphed in recognising the worth of dogs for their expert nose, and protective and willing nature. Of particular interest are the stories that follow individual animals, from renowned German Shepherd Rex to quirky determined Fox Terrier Zippy. The individual nature of the dog and how that affects their work is fascinating.
Beautiful empathetic Taz’s story proves that the bond between handler and dog runs deep, and that they are so much more than just a tool. The dog and handler become a true team, where each understands the other. Of huge importance is the training of both dog and handler, the animal’s welfare, and once they reach retirement, re-homing of police dogs.
A captivating and rewarding read, Canine Crimebusters not only contains amazing stories of tireless dedication and outstanding bravery, it also highlights the history and growth of the police dog unit. Highly recommended.
