"Can three sisters protect their love when they disagree about how to use their magic? A YA romantasy about memory, trust, and being bound to a sexy evil magician "
One of my favourite things about reading magical stories like this one is the imaginative ways that storytellers find to make magic work – what are the laws and rules of magic governing this new world? I loved that in this story, the cost of using magic is memory – and naturally this has different impacts on the different personalities of the characters, which then feels a really strong way to understand and believe those characters.
We are introduced to the three Perdita sisters, for example, whose mother was magically forgetful to the point of amnesia, unable to care for her children, and then disappearing. We are privy to our main character, Calliope, sacrificing memories of parties, her ex Marigold, or her sister’s care for her, in order to work her witchcraft, which as a storytelling device, is a great way for us to see the character’s past embedded naturally within the present story.
I’m always happy to read normalised queer characters in magical stories too; here, a bisexual main character and non-binary characters with they/them pronouns.
