Both my head and heart were captured by the first novel in this richly realised fantasy trilogy as it blends Jewish folklore with elements of history. Toba and Naftaly flee their homes when the Queen orders all Jews to leave or convert. While Naftaly explores his dreams, Toba enters a magical mirror world containing echoes of her own.
Author Ariel Kaplan has drawn a world that feels both familiar and yet unknown, persecution stalks the streets, friendships form, and magic pushes boundaries. While there are most definitely elements of pace, one of my favourite aspects of this novel is how relationships are allowed to develop over time and the plot snakes and meanders, encouraging thoughts to ebb and flow.
I always feel more at peace with a character when they aren’t perfect, the different shades of the two main characters here meant they formed fully realised in my minds eye. Touches of humour are played with a subtle hand, while violence tears through pages spearing emotions, and questions are buried to lie in wait.
The magic here feels dangerous, dark, and sometimes even ugly. These are mirror realms that feel as though they could be real, and so this novel had to join my Liz Picks of the Month. Wonderfully and vibrantly vivid and bold, The Pomegranate Gate is a fascinating new entry into fantasy folklore.
