Aimed mainly at middle managers, ‘Managed by Morons’ by James Lawther provides a look into some of the dysfunctional behaviours in small and large organisations and how they can impede a business from flourishing.

From the confusion at the Oscars in 2017 to the changing prospects of Microsoft and beyond, the author uses clear, jargon-free phrasing and examples to explain each idea before offering a summary and possible actions at the end of each chapter. I liked the flow of the writing, whether he was explaining the application of a piece of academic theory or using an anecdote to illustrate his point the language used throughout is easy to follow, the casual tone making the book really approachable.

I also liked that there was no pedestal or finger-pointing, as it says “I have singled out (amongst others) Microsoft, Amazon, IKEA and Whirlpool as examples of companies doing the right things. I am sure they have their failings“. No one business is perfect, and each has the potential to change for better or worse, there’s opportunities to learn everywhere.

Although this book is aimed at middle management looking for ways to improve their systems, I think that this would be an enlightening read regardless of where you are in the workforce. Whether it leads for new ideas to implement or offers perspective as to why some systems are in place.
