Far from the bright lights and the glitz and glamour live “The Mole People”, those who find themselves living outside of society in the storm drains of Las Vegas. Suzie Franks is struggling to manage the symptoms of her Schizophrenia while at college in Oregon before she finds herself living in such challenging circumstances. ‘The Mole People’ is a brief but intense tale as we watch Suzie battle against her own mind and falling into addiction in her struggle for survival. This is a powerfully written, emotional story that condenses a lot into a relatively small number of pages. The onslaught of thoughts and hallucinations Suzie experiences builds like a tidal wave, or a surge of water through a storm drain, creating a sense of overwhelm for the reader that sends you off kilter with our main character. My heart broke for Suzie as I read, struggling with Schizophrenia and later the addictions that she turned to in an effort to block out the symptoms. As I was reading I was hoping that she would make it through ok. I also think that the perspectives of Dana and Robbie were well-constructed, the despair of trying to help someone oozes from the page. The Mole People is an intense and impactful read, depicting battles with mental health as well as the thriller aspect of the underground of Las Vegas in one woman’s struggle for survival.
