"An easy afternoon read with plenty to contemplate and provoke thought."
Nine short stories that follow a male protagonist through life and events that left their mark. ‘Scar Songs: Stories’ by W. Royce Adams is a collection of nine short stories that follow an unnamed male protagonist through events at different stages of life that left a physical or mental scar.
From getting into trouble in Mexico, to the loss of his mother and brother. Having read ‘As Time Goes By’ some of the characterisation and stories were familiar to me and were pleasant to revisit but perhaps won’t have the same effect on me as they would on a new reader. As with the author’s other work I found that there was a philosophical edge to some of the stories, ‘Thief Catcher’ for example, will have you pondering what you would do in the young protagonists place and the possible wider implications around the situation.
An array of emotions are explored in each of the different stories: loss, grief and the complexities of family and family dynamics. ‘Winter Break’ felt to me as though it stood apart from the rest of the stories in the collection slightly because of the writing style. Whereas the other stories in the collection seem reflective, the present tense makes the reader feel as trapped in the moment as the professor and removes opportunity for reflection.
Each story is unique, well-crafted and feels complete and while the stories are varied they all offer a unique take on the main theme of the scars left behind. The narratives flow easily, like catching up with a friend. An easy afternoon read with plenty to contemplate and provoke thought.
