"Mark le Claire shares the journal entries connected to his friend, John"
Available in Hardback on Amazon.
Spanning over thirty years, this collection of Diary excerpts shows the developing friendship between Mark and John. Beginning in the early entries referring to him by his full name, Mark shares the entries of the many diaries he’s kept over the years that refer to John from 1984 to 2018. Focusing mainly on his own life and work as an artist and writer, struggling at times and with a variety of jobs, le Claire’s ‘The John Diaries’ cares for John as his health declines due to suffering from Schizophrenia, and visits often as he needs residential support and care.
Perhaps contrary to the suggestion in the title, ‘The John Diaries’ are focused mainly on the events in Mark's life. Beginning as longer form reflective pieces, 79 pages in and in 1988 the entries become more brief and factual, giving brief flashes into the author’s life at the time. Both styles of diary entry are clear and easy to read. There are footnotes throughout to offer brief hindsight thoughts, context or dates and details of world events throughout. I personally preferred the initial style instead of the brief almost bullet-pointed style of the majority of the entries, which lost any opportunity for reflection and connection with the author for me.
This is a very open and raw collection of diary entries, sharing pretty much everything from the author’s personal life. Possibly of interest to Mark and John’s friends and family, or for anyone else who enjoys reading diaries and considering what they were doing between 1984 and 2018.
