"The ups, downs and adventures of managing a luxury safari lodge in Tanzania."
Available in Kindle and Paperback from Amazon.
Graeme’s childhood ambition to climb Kilimanjaro and subsequent visits to Africa made him fall in love with the continent, so when the opportunity arose, it seemed a simple decision to move with his wife Candy to Tanzania. The warmth and welcoming nature of the locals swiftly found them work managing a luxury safari lodge and tales of their new life in Africa unfold.
Don't Shake the Mango Tree - Tales of a Scottish Maasai by Graeme Forbes-Smith shares the ups and downs that the couple have faced whilst living in Tanzania, from the sudden loss of their friends, to managing Lion visitations at the lodge, bites and bouts of malaria, coupled with weddings, new friends and successes. Each chapter tells its own particular anecdote and although not a directly chronological account, the narrative flows well and the perspective of Candy is also included.
The warm atmosphere of the lodge seeps from the pages. The guests and staff and the vibrant characters that are encountered are brought to life as each tale is woven. The sense of community, with familiar faces reappearing in times of need or spontaneously while in town brings a friendly and welcoming vibe to the whole book. Don't Shake the Mango Tree is a really affable read, while never making light of the losses, challenges and realities of everyday life in Africa, its stories invite you along for the ride and anyone who is interested in or planning a trip may find this a book to enjoy. For those who have already been to Africa, this book may provoke an opportunity to reminisce.

At age fifty, Graeme and Candy have a mid-life crisis! Abandon their comfortable Edinburgh life and move to Tanzania where they rent a cottage on a deserted beach near an old friend who tragically dies and they have to bury. Out of the blue they accept a job to manage a luxury safari lodge in the middle of the wild African bush. Surrounded by witch doctors and an array of eccentric and exotic friends they set out on a new career while surviving bouts of malaria, scorpion stings and encounters with lions. As the years pass, their life becomes an exciting rollercoaster of emotions and madcap adventures as they are submerged into the local culture and gradually become respected members of the Maasai community. Floating on the surface like swans, they paddle furiously below water as they cater to their international guests' every whim. Life is not dull. Each tale is told with a touching blend of humour, tragedy, gratitude and joy. Graeme and Candy fell in love with Africa. Reading this book, it is impossible not to do the same.
