This is a heartfelt tale about warm and welcoming people as they establish their lives in the equally welcoming town of Carvoeiro.
Following on from ‘Another Day in Paradise’, Karen Telling’s ‘Our Little Piece of Paradise’ continues the story of a British couple’s new life in the Algarve. We re-join Karen and Nick Telling as they move into their own home after a period of renting. The same readable tone of the first book is present here as the author shares challenges with renovations, health battles and and the constant expanding of their family with adopted and fostered four legged friends. Bringing us right up to date, we learn more about the couple and their community, as well as the impact of Brexit and Covid on their respective jobs. As well as, of course, the many different animals that have joined and left them throughout their time in Portugal. I found ‘Our Little Piece of Paradise’ provided more of the Tellings' story in a way that exudes hope and positivity. A great follow on to the first book which I think rounds out Nick and Karen’s story really well. This is a heartfelt tale about warm and welcoming people as they establish their lives in the equally welcoming town of Carvoeiro.

When a young British couple, Karen and Nick first took a holiday in the Algarve in Portugal, little did they know that 35 years on they would find themselves permanent residents and much-loved members of the local community, well-known for rescuing and housing stray animals, working alongside the local vet and even helping the local fire brigade! This eagerly awaited sequel to Karen’s acclaimed and hugely popular first book “Another Day in Paradise” continues the story of life in the Algarve, its miracles and challenges as Karen lives with the aftermath of a spinal operation, gets herself through a gruelling language test hoping to gain citizenship and pursues her passion for rescuing cats and dogs, all of them characters in their own right. Another heart-warming slice of life from an author with a brilliant eye for both the absurd and the humane as she shares the reality of living their dream.
