‘Finding Fame’ by Paul Baker Is a memoir and a look into how one man throughout the many varied experiences of his life managed to find F.A.M.E: Failure, Ambition, Mindset and Exercise. From early years at school to a military career and expeditions to summit Mt Blanc and reach Everest Base Camp, the author reflects on his life and how the discipline and determination taught to him in his earlier years have led him to overcome the challenges he’s faced. Covering the changes in the education system and the removal of corporal punishment to training to be awarded the Kyokushinkai Karate black belt at 16, to military training, his various tours and right up until COVID 19 cut short a ski trip in 2020, this book covers a lot of ground. I liked the chapter ‘Does He Fight It?’ but would have perhaps liked to see it placed at the start of the book, so that the stories can develop from there as opposed to there being a bit of repetition at the end. The author is a fierce advocate of discipline and determination, taught to him through various sporting pursuits, as a way of developing a positive mindset that allows you to continue to grow as a person. Written in a way that’s intended to inspire the reader to identify their own goals and ambitions, to expect knockbacks and to keep going in order to achieve what you really want in life.
