A to Z of You and Me by James Hannah

Sarah Broadhurst's view...

Longlisted for the Desmond Elliott Prize 2015.

Forty year old Ivo is dying of kidney failure. As he lies in his hospice bed his sister tries to persuade him to see an old and dear friend but Ivo refuses. He cannot forgive the man for something we are not told about until near the end of this sensitive book. The slow unfolding events, the snippets of the past, the hint of tragedy to keep us guessing, even a touch of humour will keep you hooked for, despite the gloomy subject matter, this is a beautiful book, a most impressive debut. Although short it needs to be savoured and read slowly.

If you like James Hannah you might also like to read books by Chris Cleave, David Nicholls and Elizabeth Noble.

Synopsis

A to Z of You and Me by James Hannah

Longlisted for the Desmond Elliott Prize 2015.

I'm lying here in a bed, my head full of regret, with only a little bird flitting through a tree to comfort me. Friends want to visit, but I refuse them. So my carer Sheila has given me a task to keep me occupied. An A-Z list. Think of a part of my body for each letter. Tell a little tale about it. When I reach H for Heart, what will I say? How we loved to string crocheted hearts in trees? How our hearts steadily unravelled? So I begin with A. Adam's apple. Will you be there to catch me when I fall?
