Sarah Broadhurst's view...

This is a wonderfully readable book, exciting and not too long, unlike so much fantasy. It’s really good to be able to follow a single character on his journey without the confusion of hundreds of people with difficult names scattered all over the place. A simple story well told from which much pleasure can be derived. Yarvi is a lovely character to be with; his challenges, the way his attitudes change, interesting and compelling reading. This is the start of a trilogy so we can expect more adventure to come, and check out some of Abercrombie’s other books, there are lots to choose from!

If you like Joe Abercrombie you might also like to read books by David Gemmell, Steven Erikson and Scott Lynch.

Synopsis

Half a King by Joe Abercrombie

A classic coming-of-age tale set in a vivid and richly-imagined world from Sunday Times bestselling author Joe Abercrombie. 'Grabbed me from page one and refused to let go' GEORGE R.R. MARTIN Betrayed by his family and left for dead, Prince Yarvi, reluctant heir to a divided kingdom, has vowed to reclaim a throne he never wanted. But first he must survive cruelty, chains and the bitter waters of the Shattered Sea itself - all with only one good hand. Born a weakling in the eyes of a hard, cold world, he cannot grip a shield or swing an axe, so has sharpened his mind to a deadly edge. Gathering a strange fellowship of the outcast, he finds they can help him more than any noble could. Even so, Yarvi's path may end as it began - in twists, traps and tragedy ...

About the Author

Joe Abercrombie

Joe Abercrombie was born in Lancaster on the last day of 1974, the son of an English teacher and a sociologist. He spent much of his youth in imaginary worlds, and left school with a good idea of how to make stuff up. He moved to the big city, learned to brew tea, and ended up as a TV editor, working on documentaries, events and concerts for bands from Iron Maiden to Coldplay. But in the darkness of the night he was still making stuff up, and his first book, The Blade Itself, was published in 2006. He now lives in Bath with his wife Lou and their three children Grace, Eve and Teddy and makes stuff up full-time.
