Bliss House by Laura Benedict

Sarah Broadhurst's view...

This is the start of a series based at Bliss House over the generations. Here, as it opens there is a feel of menace and the boy’s character is unveiled. Suspense mounts, are we in for a ghost story, a mystery or a family drama? Well we get it all in a slow build with a lot of background to deal with as often happens at the beginning of a series. At its heart it is a haunted house story where a mother takes her damaged teenage daughter back to the old family home to heal … but darkness lies within.

Bliss House by Laura Benedict

The past never stays buried at Bliss House...Rainey Bliss Adams' perfect life came to an end one spring afternoon, when her husband was killed in an explosion that horrifically burned their fourteen year-old daughter, Ariel. Desperate for a new start, she takes Ariel to live in the beautiful house in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains where the Bliss family has lived for over a century. Once there, Ariel starts to mysteriously heal. But as a series of tragedies begins to unfold, it becomes clear that a darkness lurks behind the dignified facade of Bliss House - one which will drive both mother and daughter apart, as each is forced to confront its evil on her own...Richly Gothic, creeping and dark, Bliss House is a haunting tale of loss, love - and the secrets our houses can keep.

'Bliss House draws you in and refuses to let you go. The story is eerie, seductive, and suspenseful. Read it' --Meg Gardiner, Edgar award-winning author

'In Bliss House, Laura Benedict has written just the type of novel I love to read: a ghost story replete with good and evil, present and past colliding, and compelling characters to root for; a story that grabs you by throat and heart and won't let go. I loved it' --Erica Spindler, NYT bestselling author of JUSTICE FOR SARA

'Bliss House is a rare accomplishment: a novel that works as a mystery, a ghost story, and a touching family drama' --Jeff Abbott, NYT bestselling author of INSIDE MAN

'Benedict's writing is lush and seamless, catapulting the reader into the gripping story from the opening line and holding them, taut and breathless, to the very last. You do not want to miss Bliss House. It's a compulsively readable tour de force from a wonderful writer. I couldn't put it down' --J.T. Ellison, NYT bestselling author of WHEN SHADOWS FALL

'I've longed for this book - an intelligent haunted house story with twists and turns and a history...Bliss House edges Benedict firmly into Shirley Jackson territory with this rich, evocative novel about the power of blood to corrupt' --R.B. Chesterton, author of THE DARKLING
