The Edge of the Water by Elizabeth George

Sarah Broadhurst's view...

The second in her Young Adult series which are set in her native America and bring touches of the supernatural into the suspense story. I mention all this for she is better known for her very English detective novels featuring Inspector Lynley. Here we have a fishing village that protects a black seal who visits annually. They have named her Nera and hold a festival in her honour once a year. Well into the story of an intriguing community we are introduced to Cilla, a wretched injured girl and now the tale changes gear. Centring on a bunch of 15- and 16-year olds discovering their sexuality, this is a wonderful read for teenagers and adults alike.

If you like Elizabeth George you might also like to read books by Jane Adams, Reginald Hill and Ian Rankin.
