The Doll Maker by Richard Montanari

Sarah Broadhurst's view...

Although part of a series that features Byrne and Balzano there is no need to read the previous books in order to enjoy this one. The story is tightly plotted and moves along at a good steady pace. We are introduced to the killers at an early stage and part of the story is told from their perspective as they stalk and select their victims. They are intriguing, mysterious and slightly wacky and take meticulous care in their presentation of the bodies in scenes that are reminiscent of Victorian dioramas. It’s great trying to work out the connections and motives before they are revealed; not for the squeamish.

If you like Richard Montanari you might also like to read books by P. J. Tracy, Oliver Stark and Tess Gerritsen.

Who is Sarah Broadhurst

The Good Book Guide logo The Good Book Guide Review. The Doll Maker is another winner for the always-reliable Richard Montanari. In this unsettling narrative, Mr Marseille is a well-spoken, well-turned-out and intelligent man devoted to his beloved Annabelle. He has, however, one major character flaw: he is a major-league psychopath. In a quiet Philadelphia suburb, a woman discovers a murdered girl posed on a newly painted bench; she has been strangled. Beside her, bizarrely, is a formal invitation to a tea dance in a week’s time. Shortly afterwards, more victims begin to turn up, similarly posed. It’s up to detectives Byrne and Balzano to crack a particularly challenging case. Richard Montanari may not be in the very upper limits of sales echelons, but he’s one of the best thriller writers around.

Synopsis

The Doll Maker by Richard Montanari

Mr Marseille is polite, elegant, and erudite. He would do anything for his genteel true love Anabelle. And he is a psychopath. A quiet Philadelphia suburb. A woman cycles past a train depot with her young daughter. And there she finds a murdered girl posed on a newly painted bench. Strangled. Beside her is a formal invite to a tea dance in a week's time. Seven days later, two more young victims are discovered in a disused house, posed on painted swings. At the scene is an identical invite. This time, though, there is something extra waiting for Detectives Kevin Byrne and Jessica Balzano. A delicate porcelain doll. It's a message. And a threat.

'This'll give you the shudders ... Brilliantly gripping.' Peterborough Telegraph

'Montanari is fast becoming the master of murder macabre; no phantoms, no vampires, no supernatural forces at work in these thrilling crime novels, just terrifying, complex, compelling psychopaths who knock other fictional killers into a hangman's hat.' Lancashire Evening Post

'Top psycho fare' Weekend Sport
