Sarah Broadhurst's view...

Written in several voices and dual-time, this is one of those thrillers that you really need to keep your wits about you to sort out who is who and what is what and then it connects … wow. We meet Kara whose mother was killed by a car bomb in Damascus, Mahmoud whom she loves but doesn’t really know it, Reiger who needs a document translated, George who can do just that, and then suddenly we switch to Afghanistan. Finally we have a cat-and-mouse chase across Europe. This is terrific.

July 2014 Debut of the Month and eBook of the Month.

Who is Sarah Broadhurst

The Good Book Guide logo The Good Book Guide Review. The Head of Zeus imprint was the brainchild of one of the doyens of British publishing, Anthony Cheetham, who has long demonstrated his instincts for the crime-fiction genre (the crime list of the publisher Orion was once under his belt). And even though he was not involved with Joakim Zander’s The Swimmer, it is proof that his golden touch filters down among his colleagues. This is a particularly powerful crime novel, with the narrative grasp that puts most other current practitioners to shame; what’s more, Zander has a truly individual writing style which channels prose quite unlike that of any of his colleagues.

Synopsis

The Swimmer by Joakim Zander

Klara Walldeen was orphaned as a child and brought up by her grandparents on a remote Swedish archipelago. She is now a political aide in Brussels - and she has just seen something she shouldn't: something people will kill to keep hidden. On the other side of the world, an old spy hides from his past. Once, he was a man of action, so dedicated to the cause that he abandoned his baby daughter to keep his cover. Now the only thing he lives for is swimming in the local pool. Then, on Christmas eve, Klara is thrown into a terrifying chase through Europe. Only the Swimmer can save her. But time is running out...
