In Love and War by Lesley Lokko

Lovereading view...

Fans of Lesley will notice a slight change of direction with this, her latest novel. It is bigger, more ambitious than her norm. Leaping backwards and forwards in time as it follows different characters, it centres on the Middle East and its turmoil. We follow war correspondent Lexi as she attempts to rescue a kidnapped Egyptian woman doctor. We follow her relationships, her passions, her fears and her dangers, but we also follow the many strands and stories of the characters surrounding the plots. It’s a big book on a big canvas, beautifully told.

If you like Lesley Lokko you might also like to read books by Tilly Bagshawe, Louise Bagshawe and Amelia Carr.

The Good Book Guide logo The Good Book Guide Review. Three very different women find their lives intertwine in this powerful tale of love, ambition and global conflict. Veteran reporter Lexi Sturgis will risk anything in search of a good story – travelling to war zones and putting her life in the hands of dangerous fighters – and fading TV star Jane Marshall thinks Lexi may have just the headline-grabber she needs to revive her career. Meanwhile, young medical student Deena travels to Egypt to play her part in an unfolding humanitarian crisis. Moving through the decades and across the globe, this is a thought-provoking and engrossing story of idealism and endurance.

In Love and War by Lesley Lokko

Lexi Sturgis is a woman in a man's world, a war correspondent whose life has taken her to some of the world's most troubled regions. Lexi is never happier than when she's dodging bullets, chasing down the leads that other reporters only dream of getting, or swapping stories with her rivals at the bar. She thrives on risk, danger and the thrill of the chase, while keeping everyone else at arm's length - colleagues, friends and lovers. TV executive Jane Marshall needs a Big Idea. With her career nose-diving and her colleagues circling for her job, she needs to pull something major out of the hat. And Lexi might just be what she needs. When a young British woman is kidnapped in Egypt, both Lexi and Jane are thrown together on a journey which will change their lives entirely. It will take them into a world where no one is quite what they seem and menace lurks in every corner. Sometimes, when your back's against the wall, the only thing to do is trust in the person closest to you...
