The Voices by F. R. Tallis

Sarah Broadhurst's view...

A creepy tale from a very experienced author. As Frank Tallis he wrote the Liebermann series and has several other supernatural thrillers to this name. Thriller is not really the word I would use for this one, more creeping horror. The story takes its time to build and draw the reader in with little hints of the strangeness to come. Chilling writing and an interesting take on the primal fear of hearing strange voices in the dark.

Synopsis

The Voices by F. R. Tallis

In the scorching summer of 1976 - the hottest since records began - Christopher Norton, his wife Laura and their young daughter Faye settle into their new home in north London. The faded glory of the Victorian house is the perfect place for Norton, a composer of film soundtracks, to build a recording studio of his own. But soon in the long, oppressively hot nights, Laura begins to hear something through the crackle of the baby monitor. First, a knocking sound. Then come the voices. For Norton, the voices mark an exciting opportunity. Putting his work to one side, he begins the project of a lifetime - a grand symphony incorporating the voices - and becomes increasingly obsessed with one voice in particular. Someone who is determined to make themselves heard ...F. R. Tallis' background as a clinical psychologist sets his writing apart. He knows exactly how to scare you ...

Reviews

Highly compelling, undeniably scary, with a final payoff so horrific it's hard to shake, The Voices is clever. * SFX * A spooky supernatural chiller. * horrorcultfilms.co.uk * An intriguing story with a dark twist in the tale. * http://scifibulletin.com * Creepy. CREEPY . . . A genuinely disturbing story . . . As things take a sinister turn you will end up looking over your shoulder - towards the end of this I could barely put it down. * http://lizzy11268.booklikes.com * Highly compelling, undeniably scary, with a final payoff so horrific it's hard to shake, The Voices is clever. * SFX * A spooky supernatural chiller. * horrorcultfilms.co.uk * An intriguing story with a dark twist in the tale. * http://scifibulletin.com * Creepy.
