Sarah Broadhurst's view...

Wow, this is good. We have two stories in parallel. Stevie, a TV shopping channel presenter attempts to find her boyfriend’s killer; said boyfriend was a doctor researching into treatment for cerebral palsy. The other story, which will presumably continue on through the trilogy (for that is what this is), is about a world crumbling under the strain of a global virus. There is a breakdown of law and order, corpses piling up in hospitals, people dying in their cars, attempts to create ‘virus free zones’, all well handled for this never descends into a shock-‘n’-hysterical drama. It all just goes on quietly in the background getting worse and worse … quite extraordinary. There is a stunning prologue which as yet is not relevant to the story so that will no doubt become so in future titles. I can’t wait.

If you like Louise Welsh you might also like to read books by Kate Atkinson, Denise Mina and Jake Arnott.

The Good Book Guide logo The Good Book Guide Review. As a bubonic plague-like virus decimates the population, TV presenter Stevie arrives at her boyfriend Simon’s flat to find him dead. Everyone involved assumes he is a casualty of the epidemic, but Stevie thinks otherwise and begins a desperate search for Simon’s murderer. As society collapses around her, she has two problems: to convince everyone she encounters (in the face of massive loss of life) that one death counts. And she has to survive in a city where the Grim Reaper strides unchallenged.

Synopsis

A Lovely Way to Burn by Louise Welsh

It doesn't look like murder in a city full of death. A pandemic called 'The Sweats' is sweeping the globe. London is a city in crisis. Hospitals begin to fill with the dead and dying, but Stevie Flint is convinced that the sudden death of her boyfriend Dr Simon Sharkey was not from natural causes. As roads out of London become gridlocked with people fleeing infection, Stevie's search for Simon's killers takes her in the opposite direction, into the depths of the dying city and a race with death. A Lovely Way to Burn is the first outbreak in the Plague Times trilogy. Chilling, tense and completely compelling, it's Louise Welsh writing at the height of her powers.
