Follow-up to The Bone Thief but you can read this on its own. It continues the adventures of Wulfgar, a young educated nobleman serving as a clerk in the employment of Athelfled, eldest daughter of the recently deceased King Alfred. England is still not a single unit, Danes/Viking attacks are frequent and there are constant machinations between various rulers. You need to keep your wits about you following all concerned to help, they are detailed for you at the start. This is Wessex from the other side of Bernard Cornwell’s Warrior World for our hero is a cleric, a lovely character.
