Karen Hamilton spent her childhood in Angola, Zimbabwe, Belgium and Italy and worked as a flight attendant for many years. Karen is a recent graduate of the Faber Academy and, having now put down roots in Hampshire to raise her young family with her husband, she satisfies her wanderlust by exploring the world through her writing. Karen's first novel, The Perfect Girlfriend, was a Sunday Times bestseller. The Last Wife is her latest novel.
Charlotte and Sam were partners. In life, and in crime. They never stole from anyone who couldn't afford it. Wealthy clients, luxury cruise ships. It was easy money, and harmless. At least, that's what Charlotte told herself, until the world caved in on her. But now, years after she tried to put that past life behind her, it comes rushing back when her estranged ex-husband Sam suddenly goes missing - and someone threatens to expose what they did. Desperate to escape whoever is tormenting her, Charlotte takes a job as events planner for an engagement party onboard a superyacht in the Caribbean. For a while, her plan seems to have worked, nothing but open ocean and clear skies ahead. Until it becomes clear that she's no longer a thousand miles away from harm. Because whoever is behind it all is onboard too. And now there's nowhere left to run.
A cunning, creeping, slow-burning family drama. When Nina was diagnosed with a terminal illness, she asked her best friend Marie to fulfil her final wishes. As Marie steps forward into a life she has always envied and wanted, she discovers that Nina had some damaging secrets. Marie narrates, she’s not particularly loveable, or even likeable, and I really enjoyed how that made me doubt, question, and hold back from forming an opinion of her. It felt as though Marie was being honest with her feelings, but not her thoughts, and that created huge uncertainty. As the atmosphere and my suspicion settled, a change of direction elbowed its way in which added an extra dimension. The Last Wife almost slithers along, delivering bites of tension and suspense, ensuring an interesting read.
Greed, envy, covetousness, lust, anger - Karen Hamilton’s The Ex-Husband is an enthralling, exquisitely plotted thriller that gets to the heart of a host of base human drives, pretty much running the gamut of the seven deadly sins. Sam and Charlotte loved the good things in life - luxury locations, jewellery, villas, yachts - but as cruise ship workers (he a croupier, she in retail and, later, events), their wages don’t bring them the lifestyle they feel they deserve. So, when Charlotte is seduced by Sam and they marry, they hatch dozens of seemingly harmless plans to relieve wealthy passengers of their money and luxury possessions. Years later, now separated and trying to move on, Charlotte’s past comes back to haunt her big style while on a new job aboard an ultra-swish private yacht in the Caribbean. The sense of closing in and conspiracy is feverishly, cleverly created as a tsunami of twists leads to a thrilling, unexpected finale. Hamilton has a huge talent for page-turning plotting, and her psychological insights are as sharp as a pair of luxury Louboutin stilettos.
