Arturo Pérez-Reverte is one of Spain's foremost novelists whose books include The Flanders Panel, The Dumas Club, The Fencing Master and Captain Alatriste (the first in the Alatriste series).
Quite different form his usual action adventure novels this is a much more serious book which is perhaps slightly autobiographical as the main character is a war photographer, Perez-Reverte was a war journalist. This novel is definitely anti-war and is far more cynical than his previous novels. He is a marvellous writer though, just don’t expect this to be like some of his lighter work.
Glorious swashbuckling stuff, a sort of D’Artagnan/Zorro cross, and the start of a series set in Madrid in the 1620s by a highly respected literary Spanish author having a great deal of fun.Similar this month: None but try Gideon Defoe and Bernard Cornwell.Comparison: C C Humphreys, Martin Stephen, James McGee.
Captain Alatriste, the chief protagonist in Purity of Blood is a born hero who lives by his sword – a cross between Zorro and D’Artagnan. Quick witted, charismatic and flamboyant he may be but he has many enemies and his task in this the second book in which he features is to solve the mystery of a woman found strangled near a church whilst also rescuing the daughter of a great friend from a convent where she has been seduced by priests. Powerfully written, entertaining and compulsive too.
