Find out moreGregory McDonald (February 15, 1937 - September 7, 2008) was an American mystery writer best known for his creation of the character Irwin Maurice Fletcher, an investigative reporter who preferred the nickname -Fletch.- Two of the Fletch books earned Edgar Awards from the Mystery Writers of America: Fletch was named Best First Novel in 1975, and Confess, Fletch won for Best Paperback Original in 1977. This is the only time a novel and its sequel won back-to-back Edgars. Mcdonald would go on to write seven more Fletch novels, including the prequels Fletch Won and Fletch Too. The original book became a 1985 movie of the same name starring Chevy Chase.
A Maxim Jakubowski selected title. A reissue of two thrillers by the creator of that wonderful criminal rascal Fletch (and if you think of him as Chevy Chase in those awful self-satisfied movies, DO go back to the humorous originals which are so much better). The first, Snatch, is a quirky kidnapping tale at high octane speed that never runs out of fuel and brings a sardonic voice to a story of political conspiracies set in New York. The pace never tires, adventure at its spiky best. The second novel in the volume, Safekeeping, also revolves around the abduction of an 8 years old child and the hapless band of kidnappers who organised the crime. At times tongue in cheek, but always suspenseful in a light-hearted manner, both novels demonstrate the relaxed style and storytelling of the late McDonald, with a zest of social satire and larger than life villains and not quite heroes that was his trademark. A worthy set of rediscoveries. ~ Maxim Jakubowski
Offering up brisk, tightly written plots and a stellar cast of characters both new and old, Confess, Fletch finds our incorrigible protagonist back in deep waters once again.Fletch, now newly engaged and happily living out his days in Italy, finds himself embroiled in yet another scandal. His soon-to-be father-in-law has been kidnapped and is now presumed dead, and the priceless collection of rare art that belongs to his fiancee's family has been stolen.Ever the investigative reporter, he receives a tip about the missing art that lands him in Boston, where he walks right into a murder scene in his apartment. What clearly looks like a setup to the unfazed Fletch looks quite different to the detective assigned to the case, Mr. Francis Xavier Flynn. But even if the case is seemingly cut-and-dry, Flynn is reluctant to arrest the only suspect that stands before him.Now under the detective's watchful eye, Fletch must try to clear his name and search for the missing paintings, all while his gorgeous future mother-in-law works to persuade him for help the best way she knows how-seduction.
Fletch, investigative reporter extraordinaire, can't be bothered with deadlines or expense-account budgets when it comes to getting his story.Working undercover at the beach to dig up a drug-trafficking scheme for his next blockbuster piece, Fletch is invited into a much deeper narrative. Alan Stanwyk, CEO of Collins Aviation and all-around family man, mistakes the reporter for a strung-out vagabond and asks him for a favor: kill him and escape to Brazil with $50,000. Intrigued, Fletch can't help but dig into this suspicious deal he's being offered.Dodging the shady beach police as his case begins to break open, and with his temperamental editor Clara pushing for his article, he soon discovers that Stanwyk has a lot to hide and this plan is anything but what it seems.

Everyone loves Skylar Whitfield, Greendown County's winsome charmer. He has innate sexiness that makes women smile. But he doesn't make his cousin Jonathan smile. Jonathan's a Harvard preppy gracing the South for the first time and he has a hard time with Skylar's penchant for hot summer nights, long-legged women and southern masculinity. Skylar has an equal distaste for Jonathan's presumptions, snobbery and northern propriety. When the county beauty queen, Mary Lou Simes, is found beaten to death with Skylar's pocket knife nearby, Skylar must put his sex-filled mind and incorrigible love of the good life on hold. To find the murderer, he'll have to outwit the dimwitted police - and drag Jonathan along with him. Gregory Mcdonald heaps this rollicking series debut with enough enchantment and eros to make a naughty girl blush. Uproariously funny, Skylar is fresh, quirky, and so delicately crafted that it is at once painfully suspenseful and sweetly moving.
