Unconquerable: The Invictus Spirit

Author: Boris Starling Format: Hardback Release Date: 21/09/2017

October 2017 Non-Fiction Book of the Month Published a few days before the start of the 3rd Invictus Games in Toronto where around 550 competitors – all “wounded warriors” will be competing. This is their story told by some of those who’ve taken part in the games. As the author Boris Starling says, Invictus is different to the Paralympic games, firstly those injured in both mind and body can take part, they have a military background and there is a greater emphasis on just being there and doing your best. It highlights just what these men and women have been through, their support - both medical and personal and what the games mean to them. ~ Sue Baker Like for Like Reading The True Story of Great Britain’s Paralympic Heroes by Cathy Wood A Heavy Reckoning: War, Medicine and Survival in Afghanistan and Beyond by Emily Mayhew

Messiah

A stunning, shocking, wonderfully well written debut reminiscent of James Patterson and one that will catapault Boris Starling to the front rank of thriller writers. London is in the grip of a heatwave: airless days, strange steamy nights and a killer stalking the streets. Wealthy men are being murdered to some mysterious pattern, with no clues left behind, only corpses with silver spoons in place of their tongues… Set against this merciless butcher is DCI Red Metcalfe, an investigator with a celebrated ability to get under the skin and into the minds of the deranged killers he hunts. But as the city swelters and the body count rises, Red’s own tortured past begins to turn against him – and the city is safe for no one. Sometimes, it is said, it takes a killer to catch a killer… The most compelling and suspenseful British thriller to come along in years, and Boris Starling is a startling and powerful talent to watch. Messiah is guaranteed to haunt your dreams…

A compelling mixture of communists, the Cold War, British intelligence and Nazi death doctors, all embroiled in a science-based plot blanketed in the deathly fog of post war London … wonderfully atmospheric. Twins figure in an interesting side theme – twins stillborn and twins murdered. The science of the book centres around DNA, the blueprint of life and as the double helix of the DNA molecules twist and turn, so too does the plot. Highly enjoyable.Similar this month: None but try Jacqueline Winspear.Comparison: Robert Harris, John Le Carré, Henry Porter.

William Shakespeare's Brexit

William Shakespeare's Brexit

Author: Boris Starling Format: Hardback Release Date: 17/10/2019

BORIS JOHNSON: To leave or not to leave, that is the question: Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer The slings and arrows of outrag'd Remainers, Or to take arms against a sea of Leavers, And by opposing end them? To leave, to stay, No more; and by leaving to say we end The EU, and the thousand petty rules That we adhere to, - 'tis a consummation Devoutly to be wish'd. To stay, to leave; To stay, perchance to leave: ay, there's the rub; For in that move to leave what dreams may come, When we have shuffl'd off this Brussels yoke... 'This is our story. All Brexit's a stage, and all the men and women merely players...' Written by the Bard himself, with a little help from novelist Boris Starling, this wonderful 'comedy of errors' retells the tragic story of the UK's acrimonious break from the EU, written in wonderful iambic pentameter. A story of cynical electioneering and poisoned political scheming, featuring the likes of Boris Johnson, Theresa May and David Cameron, this is a most original take of the defining event of our time - and the perfect satire for anyone interested in politics, humour, or even a little bit of Am-dram.
