Fergie Rises How Britain's Greatest Football Manager Was Made at Aberdeen

Author: Michael Grant Format: Hardback Release Date: 21/08/2014

Shortlisted for the Football Book of the Year Award at the British Sports Book Awards 2015. When Sir Alex Ferguson retired at the end of the 2013 season, he was the most successful football manager Britain had ever seen, having won twice as many trophies as his nearest rival. But that success had not come easily. Thirty-five years previously he had arrived at the rain-swept training ground at Aberdeen F.C. as the recently sacked manager of St Mirren; a hothead with a troublesome reputation and a lot to prove. Not for nothing, many thought he was a risky choice. Fergie Rises returns to a time when Ferguson was lucky to get Aberdeen, not the other way around. It's the story of an eight-year revolution that saw the Dons and their ambitious young manager knock the Old Firm off their perch, taste victory in Europe for the first time, and electrify Scottish football. When Ferguson finally left the club for Manchester United, in 1986, fans and rivals were unanimous in believing he had engineered one of the most astonishing upheavals in the game's history. Taking a view from inside the dug-out, and with the guidance of the giants of that Aberdeen team - including Willie Miller, Jim Leighton and Gordon Strachan - Michael Grant lays bare the full story of this remarkable but little known period of Ferguson's career, revealing it as the crucible in which Britain's greatest football manager was forged. Along the way he examines the personal tragedies Ferguson overcame - the deaths of his father and his mentor Jock Stein - and the rivalries, setbacks and triumphs that shaped a sporting genius.

From Rome to Byzantium The Fifth Century AD

From Rome to Byzantium The Fifth Century AD

Author: Michael Grant Format: Paperback Release Date: 07/12/2012

Byzantium was dismissed by Gibbon, in the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, and his Victorian successors as a decadent, dark, oriental culture, given up to intrigue, forbidden pleasure and refined cruelty. This great empire, founded by Constantine as the seat of power in the East began to flourish in the fifth century AD, after the fall of Rome, yet its culture and history have been neglected by scholars in comparison to the privileging of interest in the Western and Roman Empire. Michael Grant's latest book aims to compensate for that neglect and to provide an insight into the nature of the Byzantine Empire in the fifth century; the prevalence of Christianity, the enormity and strangeness of the landscape of Asia Minor; and the history of invasion prior to the genesis of the empire. Michael Grant's narrative is lucid and colourful as always, lavishly illustrated with photographs and maps. He successfully provides an examination of a comparatively unexplored area and constructs the history of an empire which rivals the former richness and diversity of a now fallen Rome.

Collapse and Recovery of the Roman Empire

Author: Michael Grant Format: Paperback Release Date: 30/09/2012

Collapse and Recovery of the Roman Empire presents a study of third century Rome, which is lavishly illustrated and a lucid read, typical of Michael Grant's inimitable style. In Collapse and Recovery of the Roman Empire, Michael Grant asserts that the fact that the Roman empire of the third century AD did not collapse is one of the miracles of history. He argues that at that time the empire seemed ripe for disintegration and expresses amazement that it continued, in the west, for another two hundred years, and in the east, for far longer. Michael Grant examines the reasons for collapse, including analyses of the succession of emperors, the Germans and the Persians and also, the reasons for its remarkable recovery, including discussions of strong emperors, a reconstituted army, finance and coinage and state religion.

The Modern Fantastic The Films of David Cronenberg

The Modern Fantastic The Films of David Cronenberg

Author: Michael Grant Format: Paperback Release Date: 30/11/2000

In The Fly, one of Seth Brundle's experiments goes disastrously wrong, and the chimpanzee he was attempting to transport from one telepod to the other ends up in the second device, a quivering mass of flesh; the process of teleportation has turned it inside out and yet it remains in unimaginable agony alive. David Cronenberg is undoubtedly one of the great directors of transgression, violating boundaries between the subjective and the objective and, even more spectacularly, between the human and the non-human. This collection of seven critical essays explores the multifaceted nature of Cronenberg's achievement and ranges from Jonathan Crane's reassessment of Cronenberg's place within horror cinema, to Parveen Adams' intensely focused discussion of Crash. Other essays examine the place of the homoerotic body in Cronenberg's films; view M. Butterfly in relation to modern notions of literature; place the earlier work in its historical context; address the complexity and ambiguity derived from certain fundamental contrasts underpinning much of his work; and discuss some of the shortcomings of critical writings on Cronenberg. The book also includes a recent interview with the director together with a full filmography and bibliography. An important analysis for students and scholars of contemporary film and popular culture.

Collapse and Recovery of the Roman Empire

Collapse and Recovery of the Roman Empire

Author: Michael Grant Format: Hardback Release Date: 31/01/1999

From Rome to Byzantium The Fifth Century AD

From Rome to Byzantium The Fifth Century AD

Author: Michael Grant Format: Hardback Release Date: 12/02/1998

The Antonines The Roman Empire in Transition

The Antonines The Roman Empire in Transition

Author: Michael Grant Format: Paperback Release Date: 02/05/1996

The Antonines - Antonius, Pius, Marcus Aurelius, Lucius Verus and Commodus - played a crucial part in the development of the Roman Empire, controlling its huge machine for half a century of its most testing period. Theirs was a period when art and literature were flourishing. It was also a time of social and political change, and there are still many unanswered questions: did the Antonines' rule contain the seeds of later decay? How did the Christians fare? Was Commodus as bad as he was made out to be? Michael Grant examines these issues with clarity and skill. The importance of the Antonines is manifold, but it mainly lies in the fact that they represented an `age of transition'. They were playing gigantic parts in the massive historical drama that was unfolding, a drama which was destined to transform the Roman Empire from its ancient mould and bring it into the Middle Ages. Michael Grant is one of the world's greatest writers on ancient history. He has had a distinguished academic career, most recently as Vice-Chancellor of Queen's University, Belfast, and has published over fifty books.

Greek and Roman Historians Information and Misinformation

Greek and Roman Historians Information and Misinformation

Author: Michael Grant Format: Paperback Release Date: 13/04/1995

It is today widely accepted that we do not get the whole truth from any historian. Greek and Roman Historians considers the work of ancient historians such as Herotudus, Tacitus and Thucydides in the the light of this attitude. In an enlightening new study, Michael Grant argues that misinformation, even deliberate disinformation, is abundant in their writings. Grant, one of the world's greatest writers of ancient history, suggests new ways of reading and interpreting the ancient historians which maximise their usefulness as source material. He demonstrates how the evidence they provide can be augmented by the use of other, literary and non-literary, sources. Greek and Roman Historians shows us how we can use written history to learn about the ancient world, even if our conclusions are not those its historians intended. The author argues that their work remains our most important source of information, once we have learned to question and incorporate their imperfect regard for the truth. Grant's account is an indispensible guide to the sources and their interpretation for all students of ancient history.
