About Jane Austen
Jane Austen was born in 1775 in Steventon, Hampshire, the seventh of eight children of a country clergyman. She wrote from her teens, reading her stories aloud to her family.
Her six novels, from Sense and Sensibility (1811) to Persuasion (published in 1817, after her death), are sharp, funny studies of love, money and class among the English gentry. In her lifetime they were published without her name; the first was credited simply to 'A Lady'.
Two hundred years on, her books are still read, taught and adapted for film and television around the world. She died in Winchester in 1817 and is buried in Winchester Cathedral.

LoveReading on Sense and Sensibility
“Emma is a bright, beautifully written novel with real heart and I love it.”

Questions readers ask
Which Jane Austen book should I read first?
Pride and Prejudice. It is her best-known novel, quick to get into, and Elizabeth Bennet is one of the great heroines of English fiction.
Is Jane Austen hard to read?
Less than people fear. The sentences are longer than today's, but the dialogue is witty and the stories move. Emma and Persuasion reward a slower read.
Which book did she finish last?
Persuasion, completed in 1816. It was published together with Northanger Abbey in December 1817, a few months after she died.
