Tales of the Alhambra: Selected Stories
"Wander through echoing courts and jasmine-scented halls, where the whisper of Moorish kings still lingers in the painted air. In Tales of the Alhambra, Washington Irving invites the reader not into mere history, but into a waking dream of Spain—a place where stone lions keep watery vigil and forgotten soldiers pace moonlit corridors. These stories, part legend, part keen observation, ripple with the mystery of vanished empires and the quiet wonder of a traveler who listens closely. With a touch of dry humor and a pen dipped in the warm ochres and shadowed blues of Granada, Irving captures the Alhambra not as it is, but as it nearly might be—forever shimmering between truth and tale. Contents • Preface to the Revised Edition • Palace of the Alhambra • Inhabitants of the Alhambra • Alhamar, the Founder of the Alhambra • Yusef Abul Hagig, the Finisher of the Alhambra • Public Fêtes of Granada • Local Traditions • Legend of the Arabian Astrologer • Legend of Prince Ahmed al Kamel or, The Pilgrim of Love • Legend of the Moor's Legacy • Legend of the Three Beautiful Princesses • Legend of the Rose of the Alhambra • Legend of the Two Discreet Statues • Legend of Don Munio Sancho de Hinojosa • The Legend of the Enchanted Soldier • The Author's Farewell to Granada"

"The Classic Collection of Washington Irving gathers the most beloved and enduring works of one of America's earliest and most influential storytellers. This edition includes timeless tales such as The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Rip Van Winkle, The Christmas Stories, and many others that helped shape the landscape of American literature. Irving's stories blend gentle humor, gothic atmosphere, and vivid historical detail, drawing readers into early American life and folklore. "Faust is a tragic play in two parts by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, usually known in English as Faust, Part One and Faust, Part Two. Although rarely staged in its entirety, it is the play with the largest audience numbers on German-language stages. Faust is considered by many to be Goethe's magnum opus and the greatest work of German literature. The earliest forms of the work, known as the Urfaust, were developed between 1772 and 1775; however, the details of that development are not entirely clear. Urfaust has twenty-two scenes, one in prose, two largely prose and the remaining 1,441 lines in rhymed verse. The manuscript is lost, but a copy was discovered in 1886. The first appearance of the work in print was Faust, a Fragment, published in 1790. Goethe completed a preliminary version of what is now known as Part One in 1806. Its publication in 1808 was followed by the revised 1828–29 edition, the last to be edited by Goethe himself. Goethe finished writing Faust Part Two in 1831; it was published posthumously the following year. In contrast to Faust Part One, the focus here is no longer on the soul of Faust, which has been sold to the devil, but rather on social phenomena such as psychology, history and politics, in addition to mystical and philosophical topics. The second part formed the principal occupation of Goethe's last years."
