"Aphra Behn was a prolific and well-established poet and playwright but facts about her life remain scant and difficult to confirm. What can safely be said is that Aphra Behn is regarded as a key English playwright and a major figure in Restoration theatre. Her poetry is now far more appreciated and seen as a breakthrough for women of the 17th Century and beyond. Aphra was baptised on 14th December 1640 and grew up with the gathering tensions leading to the English Civil War, a time of much division and difficulty as the King, Parliament, and their respective forces, came closer and then finally into open conflict.By 1664 her marriage was over, less than a year after it began. She now used Mrs Behn as her professional name and moved towards pursuing a more sustainable and substantial career, working for the King's Company and the Duke's Company players as a scribe. Her first play 'The Forc'd Marriage', was staged in 1670, and thereafter many followed, including her later comic works, which were more commercially successful. She wrote 19 plays in all and contributed to many others as well as several works of prose.Along with her literary career there are claims she was a spy, that she travelled abroad, possibly as far as Surinam. She also claimed to have met a slave leader in Africa and based her story 'Oroonoko' on his life. Other accounts suggest that during her life she was also known as Ann Behn, Agent One-Sixty and Astrea. Her financial troubles seem to have also incurred her a brief stay in a debtors' prison. Whatever the truth, both her life and work seem rich, textured and full of adventure. From the mid 1680's Aphra's health began to decline. This was exacerbated by her continual state of debt and descent into poverty although she was often fond of saying that she had led a 'life dedicated to pleasure and poetry.' Aphra Behn died on 16th April 1689. She is buried in the East Cloister of Westminster Abbey and the inscription on her tombstone reads: "Here lies a Proof that Wit can never be Defence enough against Mortality." 1 - The Poetry of Aphra Behn - An Introduction2 - The Disappointment by Aphra Behn3 - On a Juniper Tree, Cut Down to Make Busks by Aphra Behn4 - The Willing Mistress by Aphra Behn5 - To Lysander by Aphra Behn6 - Love Armed by Aphra Behn7 - On Desire by Aphra Behn8 - The Counsel by Aphra Behn9 - Love's Witness by Aphra Behn10 - The Invitation by Aphra Behn11 - To Mrs B by Aphra Behn12 - On Her Loving Two Equally by Aphra Behn13 - The Dream by Aphra Behn14 - Song by Aphra Behn15 - A Ballad on Mr J H to Amoret, Asking Why I Was So Sad by Aphra Behn16 - The Return by Aphra Behn17 - Oh How the Hand the Lover Ought to Prize by Aphra Behn18 - The Dog in the Manger by Aphra Behn19 - Angellica's Lament by Aphra Behn20 - A Congratulatory Poem by Aphra Behn21 - A Letter to a Brother of the Pen in Tribulation by Aphra Behn22 - Epitaph on the Tombstone of a Child, the Last of Seven That Died Before by Aphra Behn23 - A Thousand Martyrs aka The Libertine by Aphra Behn24 - On the Death of the Late Earl of Rochester by Aphra Behn"

The Poetry of Katherine Mansfield
"Katherine was born on the 14th October 1888 into a prominent family in Wellington, New Zealand, the middle child of five.A gifted celloist, at one point she thought she might take it up professionally but writing gradually began to move to the forefront of her interests. Her first writings were published at an early age in school magazines. At 19 Katherine left for England where she met and befriended the modernist writers D.H. Lawrence and Virginia Woolf amongst others. She then travelled to Europe before returning to New Zealand. There she began to write the short stories that she would later become so famous for. Her stories often focus on moments of disruption and frequently open rather abruptly. There was another less-heralded side to Katherine's writings; that of poetry. Her verse certainly reflects much of the themes of her life and interests. Many poems are beautiful, thoughtful, tender and observant works on the human condition. Some though seem out of kilter for so great a talent, almost child-like in form and content. But taken as yet another facet of her work they accomplish much in helping us to understand her.By 1908 she had returned to London and to a rather more bohemian lifestyle. Life was to be lived and enjoyed. A passionate affair resulted in her becoming pregnant and in her being married off to an older man. But she left him the same evening with the marriage unconsummated. She was then to miscarry and be cut out of her mother's will (allegedly because of her lesbianism). In 1911 she was to start a relationship with John Middleton Murry, a magazine editor, and although it was volatile he supported her work and she wrote some of her best stories.During the First World War Mansfield contracted extrapulmonary tuberculosis, which rendered any return or visit to New Zealand impossible and led to her death at the tender age of 34 on 9th January 1923 in Fontainebleau, France.1 - The Poetry of Katherine Mansfield - An Introduction2 - A Fine Day by Katherine Mansfield3 - Very Early Spring by Katherine Mansfield4 - Out in the Garden by Katherine Mansfield5 - Spring Wind In London by Katherine Mansfield6 - Now I Am A Plant, A Weed by Katherine Mansfield7 - When I Was A Bird by Katherine Mansfield8 - The Wounded Bird by Katherine Mansfield9 - Across the Red Sky by Katherine Mansfield10 - Voices of the Air by Katherine Mansfield11 - Autumn Song by Katherine Mansfield12 - Winter Song by Katherine Mansfield13 - There is a Solemn Wind Tonight by Katherine Mansfield14 - The Storm by Katherine Mansfield15 - Night Scented Stock by Katherine Mansfield16 - Evening Song of the Thoughtful Child by Katherine Mansfield17 - The Town Between the Hills by Katherine Mansfield18 - The Candle by Katherine Mansfield19 - Little Girl's Prayer by Katherine Mansfield20 - A Little Boy's Dream by Katherine Mansfield21 - To LHB by Katherine Mansfield22 - A Day in Bed by Katherine Mansfield23 - A Few Rules For Beginners by Katherine Mansfield24 - Fairy Tale by Katherine Mansfield25 - Camomile Tea by Katherine Mansfield26 - The Earth Child in the Grass by Katherine Mansfield27 - There Was a Child Once by Katherine Mansfield28 - Sanary by Katherine Mansfield29 - The Sea Child by Katherine Mansfield30 - Sea Song by Katherine Mansfield31 - Sea by Katherine Mansfield32 - The Awakening River by Katherine Mansfield33 - Waves by Katherine Mansfield34 - The Opal Dream Cave by Katherine Mansfield35 - In the Rangitaki Valley by Katherine Mansfield36 - Villa Pauline by Katherine Mansfield37 - Butterfly Laughter by Katherine Mansfield38 - The Gulf by Katherine Mansfield39 - Deaf House Agent by Katherine Mansfield40 - Opposites by Katherine Mansfield41 - Country Women by Katherine Mansfield42 - The Arabian Shawl by Katherine Mansfield43 - Covering Wings by Katherine Mansfield44 - Sorrowing Love by Katherine Mansfield45 - The Meeting by Katherine Mansfield46 - The Quarrel by Katherine Mansfield47 - A Joyful Song of Five by Katherine Mansfield48 - Sleeping Together by Katherine Mansfield49 - Loneliness by Katherine Mansfield50 - A New Hymn by Katherine Mansfield51 - Stars by Katharine Mansfield52 - To God the Father by Katherine Mansfield"

"Alice Christiana Gertrude Thompson was born on 22nd September 1847 in Barnes, London. Her family travelled widely meaning that Alice's early years were spent around England, Switzerland, and France before finally settling in Italy. Her dedicated interest in religion brought a conversion to the Catholic faith. Much of that viewpoint is seen in her first published volume in 1875, 'Preludes'.In 1876 she married Wilfred Meynell, the newspaper publisher and editor and together they set up and published a number of magazines as well as publishing the initial works of several poets including Francis Thompson.Despite a hectic lifestyle of her own poetry and essays together with the family business she gave birth to eight children. Her health though was erratic, and she was frequently incapacitated by illness including migraines and depressions. As the new century dawned she along with many other artists began to question the colonial needs of Empire with its segregation and oppression. In particular she sought and gained a role in the Women's Suffrage movement as it attempted to obtain greater equality for women. Today Alice is often overlooked for the quality and stature of her poetry which, during her career brought serious official consideration. She was twice considered but passed over for the post of poet laureate after the deaths of Alfred Lord Tennyson and Alfred Austin.Alice Meynell died on 27th November 1922. The Poetry of Anne Kingsmill Finch
"Anne Kingsmill was born in April 1661 (an exact date is not known) in Sydmonton, Hampshire.Throughout her life Anne was involved in several Court cases that dragged on for years. These involved both a share of her parent's estate for her education and later her and her husband's share of an inheritance. In 1682, Anne became a maid of honour to Mary of Modena (wife of James, Duke of York, and later King James II) at St James's Palace. Anne's interest in poetry began at the palace, and she started writing her own verse. The Court however was no place for a woman to display any poetic efforts. Women were not considered suitable for such literary pursuits. At court, Anne met Colonel Heneage Finch. A courtier as well as a soldier. The couple married on 15th May 1684. The couple's marriage was enduring and happy, in part due to the equality in their partnership. Her poetic skills blossomed as she expressed her love for her husband and the positive effects of his encouragement on her artistic development. Being staunch Catholics in a changing and volatile Protestant world would bring them many problems to endure. Her husband continued to support her poetry and in 1701 she published 'The Spleen' anonymously. This well-received reflection on depression would prove to be her most popular poem. However, it also revealed the continuing and mounting problem of her own frequent depressions. When 'Miscellany Poems, on Several Occasions' was published in 1713, the cover of the first edition stated that the works were "Written by a Lady." On subsequent printings, she received credit as Anne, Countess of Winchelsea. Anne Kingsmill-Finch, Countess of Winchilsea died in Westminster on 5th August 1720."

"Mirabai was a Rajput princess born to the Rathore clan in 1498 in Kudaki, Rajasthan in northern India. Despite being one of the most significant saints in the Bhakti tradition and an immensely popular Hindu mystic and religious poet, very few facts are actually known about her life including her date of birth. It is clear that her mother died when she was very young and she was greatly influenced by her father, also a worshipper of Krishna. From a young age Mirabai's devotion to Krishna was absolute surrender and complete devotion. It was only with great reluctance that she entered a marriage, arranged by her uncle, to Prince Bhoj Raj of Chittor in 1516. The marriage ended after 5 years with the death, in quick succession, of her husband and then father-in-law, who was her protector. Her now public display of faith, mainly demonstrated by attending religious meetings, or Satsangs, with their devotional singing and dancing, brought persecution by her remaining in-laws who insisted she stop. On hearing that her brother-in-law, Vikramaditya, the then king of Chittor, might harm or even kill her, she fled. She travelled through northern India expressing her love for Krishna with some 1300 bhajans or sacred songs, usually composed with a simple rhythm and a repeated refrain. Her use of everyday language, infused with a sweetness of emotion and charm brought her a growing respect and popularity It is popularly believed that she spent her last years as a pilgrim in Dwarka Gujarat and miraculously merged with the image of Krishna in 1556."

Kama Sutra: The Practical Guide to Mind-Blowing Orgasms with The Kama Sutra, Tantric Sex Teachings a
"'The Kama Sutra' is an ancient Indian Hindu text written by Vatsyayana. It is widely considered to be the standard work on human sexual behaviour in Sanskrit literature. A portion of the work consists of practical advice on sexual intercourse. It is largely in prose, with many inserted anustubh poetry verses. 'Kama' which is one of the four goals of Hindu life, means desire including sexual desire the latter being the subject of the textbook, and 'sutra' literally means a thread or line that holds things together, and more metaphorically refers to an aphorism (or line, rule, formula), or a collection of such aphorisms in the form of a manual. Contrary to western popular perception, only 20% of Kama Sutra is about sexual positions. Kama Sutra is not exclusively a sex manual; it presents itself as a guide to a virtuous and gracious living that discusses the nature of love, family life and other aspects pertaining to pleasure oriented faculties of human life."
