The Taiwan Story: How a Small Island Will Dictate the Global Future
"Brought to you by Penguin. An urgent, indispensable guide to why Taiwan matters – for China, the West and everyone’s future When the bloody Chinese Civil War concluded in 1949, two Chinas were born. Mao’s Communists won and took China’s mainland; Chiang Kai-shek’s Nationalists fled to Taiwan island. Since then, China and Taiwan have drifted into being separate political and cultural entities. Taiwan is now a flourishing democracy and an economic success story: just one of its companies produces over 90 per cent of the semiconductors that power the world’s economy. It is a free and vibrant society. For the United States and the West, the island is a bastion of freedom against China’s assertive presence in the region. And yet China, increasingly bellicose under Xi Jinping, insists Taiwan is part of its territory and must be returned to it. Should China blockade the island and mount an invasion, it would set off a chain reaction that would pitch it against the US – escalating a regional war into a global one. Taiwan is thus a geopolitical powder keg. The Taiwan Story helps us understand how and why we’ve arrived at this dangerous moment in history. With unparalleled access to Taiwan’s political leaders and a deep understanding of the island’s history and culture, Professor Kerry Brown provides a new reading of Taiwan, its twenty-three million people, and how they navigate being caught in this frightening geopolitical standoff. This is the essential book delving into Taiwan’s unique story, buried beneath the headlines, told in an accessible, expert and urgent way. ‘Kerry Brown is one of our most perceptive and accurate foreign observers of China’ JOHN SIMPSON ‘Thorough and nuanced’ MICHAEL BOOTH ‘Compelling’ ELLIOT ACKERMAN ‘Factual, thoughtful and very well-written’ SIR MALCOLM RIFKIND © Kerry Brown 2024 (P) Penguin Audio 2024"

Mission to Mao: US Intelligence and the Chinese Communists in World War II
"From 1941 to 1947, the United States planted a liaison mission in the headquarters of Chinese Communist forces behind the lines. Nicknamed the 'Dixie Mission,' for its location in 'rebel' territory, it was an interagency delegation that included intelligence officers from the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). Mission to Mao is a social history of the OSS officers in the field that reveals the weakness of United States intelligence diplomacy in the 1940s. Drawing on over 14,000 unpublished records from five archives as well as white papers and memoirs from the participants, Sara B. Castro demonstrates how the OSS officers clashed with political appointees and Washington over the direction of the United States relationship with the Chinese Communists. Initially, the OSS officers were sent to gather intelligence that would help the war effort against Japan, but interagency and political conflicts erupted over whether the mission would later involve operations with the Communists. Castro shows how potential benefits for the war effort were thwarted by politicization and the OSS officers' own biases and blind spots. Mission to Mao is a fresh look at United States intelligence in World War II China and takes listeners beyond the history of 'China hands' versus American anticommunists, introducing more nuance."

Becoming Babasaheb: The Life and Times of Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar (Volume 1): Birth to Mahad (1891-19
"There are many intellectual biographies of Dr B.R. Ambedkar, but until now none has sought to reveal the personality of the man. They will tell you what he thought or what he wrote, but remain silent about who he actually was, his inner struggles, how he felt. They give information about Ambedkar, but do not talk about his interior life, his personal growth or how he came to be the man who left such an indelible mark on modern India's constitutional, political, social and religious landscapes. The first of an ambitious two-volume biography, Becoming Babasaheb traces Ambedkar's life journey, from his birth in 1891 to the transformative Mahad Satyagraha in 1929. It takes a completely fresh look at Ambedkar's lived experiences and teases out the nature and character of the man behind the legend. It offers an extensive, personality-driven narrative covering Ambedkar's life, along with salient aspects of his contemporary legacy, unfolding as a tale of remarkable tenacity, which it chronicles in all its rich vitality. All of Ambedkar's books and speeches are publicly available, so large volumes will forever appear interpreting his writings and presenting his ideas. Meanwhile, old myths and inaccurate 'facts' about his thought and life events, even his relationships, persist. Becoming Babasaheb has been written on the basis of entirely original archival research to set the historical record straight. A vivid portrait of the man in his times, both volumes of this biography will present readers with a new Ambedkar, the true Ambedkar."

Japanese Mythology: Kami, Demons, Spirits, and Myths of Japan
"Japanese mythology is a rich tapestry woven from the threads of ancient stories, religious beliefs, and cultural practices that have evolved over centuries. At its core, this mythology provides a window into the Japanese worldview, where nature, spirituality, and humanity are deeply interconnected. It reveals how the Japanese people have understood their place in the universe, the origins of their land, and the divine forces that shape their existence. Central to Japanese mythology is the concept of kami, which are spirits or deities that embody natural elements, ancestral spirits, and forces of nature. Unlike many Western interpretations of divinity, kami are not omnipotent or detached from the world; they exist alongside humanity, influencing daily life and requiring respect through rituals and offerings. This spiritual symbiosis between humans and kami has profoundly shaped Japanese cultural identity and continues to manifest in traditional practices and beliefs. The two primary sources of Japanese mythology, the Kojiki (Records of Ancient Matters) and the Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan), are texts that blend myth, history, and legend. Compiled in the 8th century, these works serve as foundational narratives for understanding the creation of Japan, the lineage of its emperors, and the values upheld by society. From the celestial plains of Takamagahara to the mysterious underworld of Yomi, these texts introduce readers to a vivid cosmology populated by gods, demons, and legendary heroes."

They serve as a bridge between the past and present, offering timeless lessons on resilience, community, and respect for the unseen forces that shape our world. The unique characteristics of Korean mythology are closely tied to the geography and history of the region. The Korean Peninsula, surrounded by mountains, forests, and the sea, provided a fertile backdrop for the imagination of its people. Myths and legends often feature these elements as symbolic representations of life, death, and the balance of power between the human and the divine.
