"A microscopic war rages beneath the skin—and one tiny creature is caught in the crossfire. In this darkly whimsical and surprisingly profound tale from visionary author Morgan Robertson (Futility, or the Wreck of the Titan), a cholera bacillus—elegant, peaceful, and just trying to mind his own business—finds himself swept into a surreal and deadly war inside a human bloodstream. What begins as a strange new environment quickly turns into a battlefield teeming with monstrous dog-headed rabies microbes, shapeshifting white blood cells, and strange brown invaders from an unknown realm. Told from the point of view of a single bewildered microbe, The Battle of the Monsters is both a vivid science fantasy and a sharp allegory about fear, identity, and the violence of prejudice. Combining early 20th-century science with a fantastical narrative voice, Robertson paints a microscopic epic that feels as timely today as it was imaginative then. Perfect for fans of Fantastic Voyage, Gulliver’s Travels, or satirical speculative fiction, this unique novella is brought to life with wit and nuance by narrator Richard Stibbard."

'The Grinding of the Mills' is the bizarre tale of two men born at the same moment in the same hospital but from very different backgrounds. It appears that key future events in their lives are predetermined by the timing and location of their birth...although given their different characters and circumstances, they respond in very different ways to similar challenges. When the men meet, their relationship takes a dramatic turn. At their first meeting, one saves the life of the other. Later on, events cause one to resolve to murder the other."

"Morgan Andrew Robertson (1861-1915) was a popular American author of short stories and novels who claimed to have been the inventor of the periscope. 'The Trade Wind' is the strange and unsettling story of a ship where all the crew are mysteriously struck blind after a night of drinking rum in the tropics...a condition called moon blindness, for which there is no available cure. Having lost their sight, the men must work out how to sail, navigate and negotiate bad weather at sea. But strange occurences on board suggest that not all is as it seems...."

"Morgan Andrew Robertson (1861-1915) was a popular American author of short stories and novels who claimed to have been the inventor of the periscope. 'Absolute Zero' is a strange supernatural story about two marine artists who are friends and who work in adjoining studios. The younger of the two has been working on a strange painting for some time. It shows an odd scene onboard a ship. The deck is littered with dead bodies...and the centre point of the painting is a huge, barefoot black sailor holding a young man aloft and about to dash him to his death on the icy deck. The artist himself does not know how he came up with the idea for the painting. But when he shows his canvas to the older artist, this man rummages in his old chest and pulls out an identical picture which he himself painted 50 years earlier. The faces and actions are all exactly the same. The older artist had been on the ship and had painted the terrible scene from memory. But as they seek to understand the story behind this scene, an even stranger chain of events follows."

"Morgan Andrew Robertson (1861-1915) was a popular American author of short stories and novels and claimed to be the inventor of the periscope. 'Over the Border' is a fascinating tale about hypnosis and mesmerism. The narrator lost much of his memory for many years after leaving his former life as a sailor. One night he visits a theatre where a hypnotist is performing. On his way home on the tram, he hears two doctors discussing a case at the hospital - a man with amnesia. One doctor recommends hypnosis as therapy to try to access the lost memories. The narrator is inspired to track down the hypnotist from the theatre and see whether he can help him recover his lost past...but the results of the mesmerism are quite beyond anybody's expectations."

Futility, Or the Wreck of the Titan
"This novel was published a full 14 years before the sinking of the Titanic, but listeners may be surprised at how many parallels this fictional tale has with subsequent true events. The Titan is the largest and most technologically advanced steamship of her time. She is considered unsinkable. Her full speed crossings of the Northern Lane Route carry her rich passengers in the highest standards of luxury and comfort. The less well-off travel in rougher quarters but still benefit from the speed of travel. These crossings, however, are fraught with navigational hazards, the greatest of which is ice. Unlike the ship, one member of her crew is not of the highest standard. At least, not anymore. John Rowland is a broken man who drinks to forget his past. However, when the Titan crashes into an iceberg during her attempt to break a speed record, he is forced to confront his past. Can he overcome his enemies and escape as the ship begins to sink? And can he make his way back to civilization and find self-respect once more? Adventure and soul-searching await Rowland, with a surprise ending."

The Wreck of the Titan & Morgan Robertson the Man
"In 1898, a struggling author wrote this novel about a fabulous Atlantic liner, far larger than any that had ever been built, that sinks after it collides with an iceberg. The details of the book bear a chilling resemblance to the Titanic disaster fourteen years later. Moran Robertson's tale, however, doesn't end with the passengers' watery demise; rather, it chronicles the survival of John Roland, a disgraced former Royal Navy lieutenant, who saves the young daughter of a former lover from the sinking ship, and the detective work instigated by members of Lloyd's of London when word comes in that the heavily insured ship has sunk to the bottom of the ocean. Robertson draws upon his own experience as a seaman on the Atlantic to weave a narrative interspersed with colloquial dialogue, bringing to life the conflicts between rich merchants and the men who sail the ships upon which they rely. Also included here is Morgan Robertson the Man, Robertson's autobiography and several essays about his life and work written by his friends, colleagues, and admirers."
