"'The Problem of Cell 13' is a short story by Jacques Futrelle. It was first published in 1905 and later collected in The Thinking Machine (1907), which was featured in crime writer H. R. F. Keating's list of the 100 best crime and mystery books ever published. Like Futrelle's other short stories, 'The Problem of Cell 13' features Augustus S. F. X. Van Dusen as the main character, although most of the story is seen through the perspective of a prison warden. While in a scientific debate with two men, Dr. Charles Ransome and Alfred Fielding, Augustus, 'The Thinking Machine', insists that nothing is impossible when the human mind is properly applied. To prove this, he agrees that he will take part in an experiment in which he will be incarcerated in a prison for one week and given the challenge of escaping."

"'It is quite possible that the time will come when literary historians, discussing works created in English in the twentieth century, will only briefly dwell on the works of serious writers, and all attention will be focused on the extensive and diverse staging of detective stories.. And then they will have to answer first, which explains the unheard-of popularity of this genre.' This, perhaps contradictory, but remarkable statement belongs to the critic of detective fiction, the famous English writer William Somerset Maugham. What could be more exciting and interesting than a well-written detective story? The audiobook is read by American actor Brent Bradley in English. Content: 1. Jacques Futrelle. The Phantom Motor 2. Gelett Burgess. The Denton Boudoir Mystery 3. Melville Davisson Post. Naboth's Vineyard 4. Jack London. The Leopard Man's Story 5. Suzan Glaspell. A Jury of Her Peers"

"“Logic will solve any problem; not most of them, but any problem.” —The Thinking Machine Professor Augustus S. F. X. Van Dusen, with the help of his friend Hutchison Hatch, solves a variety of mysteries using cold, hard logic. No matter how twisted the trail of clues or how clever the perpetrator, Professor Van Dusen, aptly dubbed “The Thinking Machine,” reminds us that “two and two make four, not some times, but all the time.” So when a woman begs a surgeon to amputate part of her finger or when a pearl necklace disappears from a woman’s neck at a party or when a man presents the court with his “perfect” alibi, The Thinking Machine methodically investigates all of the (logical) possibilities. In fact, the author’s own wife, May Futrelle, set out to stump her husband’s talented detective with an unsolvable mystery of her own, in which a lonely traveler takes a wrong turn and ends up in a mysterious house.
