Synopsis
The Last Legion by Valerio Massimo Manfredi
The story opens on the day that the Western Roman Empire collapses finally in 470AD, as the Last Emperor of Rome is encamped protected by the Nova Invicta Legion. All is lost in the space of a few minutes as a horde of Barbarians sweep through the camp in the fog, kill the Imperial family and take the young Emperor captive. The Roman Empire is in ruins...
But all is not lost. From the dust of battlefields emerges a small team of invincible warriors - The Last Legion. Their task is to rescue the Emperor and his enigmatic tutor and to try and resurrect the glory of Rome. All their strength of character and bravery come into play as they guide the last Caesar in a dramatic journey of escape through a devastated Italy and Northern Europe to their ultimate destinies in the land of the Britons... and the beginning of a new legend.
Reviews
Interest in all things connected with ancient Rome continues unabated, and Valerio Massimo Manfredi delivers history and excitement - in spades - in this great Roman smorgasbord of a novel, already optioned for film release. The author of the much-acclaimed Alexander Trilogy, Manfredi has this genre off to a finely honed art. The Roman Empire is falling apart, riven by barbarian attacks and internal conflict, and a group of Roman soldiers stationed in Britain attempt to rekindle the dying embers of the once-great civilization by saving Romulus Augustus, the youthful son of the last Emperor, with the intention of putting him in control of a revived empire under the guidance of his saviours. But, as history records, the scheme is doomed, and after a slew of breathless adventures in which much blood is spilt, Manfredi's protagonists find themselves back in primitive Britain, where events take a surprising turn. The extensive cast of characters is intelligently differentiated, and the sense of place is always paramount. Manfredi's extensive knowledge of the era (he's a celebrated historian in his native Italy) ensures that the background to this ambitious and impressive novel is always delivered with maximum verisimilitude.
