11.22.63

A meditation on cause and effect, the ripple of choices, and the bittersweet limits of even the best intentions.

Stephen King's 11/22/63 is a sprawling, genre-bending novel that explores the tantalising question: what if you could go back in time and stop the assassination of President John F. Kennedy?

When high school teacher Jake Epping is introduced to a mysterious time portal hidden in the pantry of a dying friend's diner, he’s thrust into 1958 with the extraordinary chance to change history. Al, the diner's owner, has used the portal himself in an attempt to alter tragic events, and now tasks Jake with an even greater mission: prevent the assassination of JFK.

But altering the past is no mean feat. The deeper Jake immerses himself in the world of late-1950s America, the more he realises how stubborn the past can be. “The past is obdurate,” Al warns, and Jake learns just how true that is. Every attempt to make changes, whether it’s stopping a local tragedy or influencing the course of national history, meets with resistance. Event though each trip back to 1958 resets the the past, Jake finds that fate doesn’t bend easily.

As Jake becomes increasingly embedded in the past, he builds a new life, makes friends, and unexpectedly falls in love. The emotional stakes rise as he begins to question what he's willing to sacrifice - and whether tampering with history is ever truly worth it. Can the world really be made better, or are some events simply meant to happen?

Haunting the edges of Jake’s journey is the mysterious Yellow Card Man, a dishevelled figure who seems to know more than he should and warns Jake against interfering with time. His eerie presence adds a surreal, almost metaphysical layer to the novel’s themes of fate, consequence, and the fragility of time.

11/22/63 is more than a time-travel thriller; Ambitious, heartfelt, and suspenseful, King’s novel is a powerful reminder that maybe everything happens for a reason.
