Kate Marshall discovers a body whilst diving in Shadow Sands reservoir with her son. Initially the coroner rules the case as a tragic accident but things don’t add up. Then Kate and her assistant Tristan start making some further dark discoveries. Then a woman goes missing and Kate and Tristan have a matter of days to save her.
This book is the second in the Kate Marshall series and the first I have read but it doesn’t effect your enjoyment of this book as it is does refer to the previous investigation so you know what has happened before. I am now looking forward to the third one in the series.

Former Met police officer and now a criminology lecturer with an occasional sideline in private investigation, Kate Marshall is back in a superior follow-up to Nine Elms, the novel which introduced her and her young research assistant, Tristan Harper. Keen to build on her relationship with nearly seventeen-year-old son Jake the pair go scuba diving in the man-made reservoir of Shadow Sands only to discover the body of a fully-clothed teenage boy. Kate asks too many questions for DCI Henry Ko’s liking, particularly when the victim’s mother tells her he was a competitive swimmer and the facts don’t fit the police’s theory. Soon after this the disappearance of a visiting lecturer in the same vicinity adds to Kate and Tristan’s concerns and sees them wonder if the two might be connected.
The case is less far-fetched than the series opener and develops the character of Tristan in a meaningful way with complex Kate facing the added test of her son wanting to visit his incarcerated father. Hugely readable with relatable characters, an involving plot and a sprinkling of humour this a perfect choice for an escapist read.

This was the first book I’ve read by Robert Bryndza and I really enjoyed it.
Kate Marshall, former police officer and occasional private investigator, becomes embroiled in the puzzling case of a healthy young man whose body is found in a reservoir. The gradual unfolding of the mystery is gripping and the flawed characters of Kate and her assistant Tristan bring a warm human touch to the story.
As in many crime thrillers, Kate and Tristan struggle to get police backing for their concerns about the case so they take an independent approach to their investigation. Their research and exploits are intriguing and keep you engaged with the story, right to the very end.
This is an entertaining book with a gripping plot and appealing main characters. I’ll definitely look out for more titles in this series in the future.

I read this in three sittings, for the simple reason I couldn’t put it down and wanted to know who was behind it all, and I didn’t get that right! The plot takes several twists and there are several strands and subplots to the complete story. However, they all tie in at the end of the book, no spoilers, to give a satisfying but believable outcome.
Excellent read and I fully intend to go back to the beginning and read Nine Elms, the first book in the Kate Marshall series.

A misty mystery, perfect for Autumn nights. It has the stuff of legends – fog, footsteps and a folklore beast, and shadowy bigwigs in the know. The characters are well drawn – described so you can visualise them and flawed or confused so you know them, or most of them. The pace builds to a compelling 2.00 am read to the finish. This is such a good read and we’re taken along very nicely with only a few little coincidences to excuse.
People are going missing near the reservoir on foggy nights and Kate – who we pledged our allegiance to in Nine Elms – gets involved. She’s an academic with an assistant, Tristan, a son, Jake, a very nasty ex, and a taste for iced tea. She can solve a crime that others find impossible and isn’t worried about stepping on toes, or even stepping where others might fear to tread.
Robert is a brilliant writer who has grown even better with each book. He has set the fast-forward button for his character, Kate Marshall, to have the potential grow into a notable PI, up there with the best.

I have read Robert's Erika Foster series and enjoyed them all. This is the second book in his Kate Marshall series which I've read out of order. It worked quite good as a standalone; but if you could read book one in the series.
It starts when Kate and her son discover the body of a drowned teenager. But is it a simple case of drowning or something more sinister. The young man in question is a strong swimmer, recently trying out for the Olympic swimming team.
As Kate and her research assistant Tristian dig deeper they have a lot of unanswered questions but things seem to point to a serial killer who is still active.
Robert not only manages to write a convincing hunt for a killer but he also throws up and highlights the frailties of his lead characters. A good picture of how human beings are mixture of complex and contradicting emotions. This book contains various themes, serial killers, alcoholism, sexuality all of which Robert handles with aplomb. His well rounded characters are facing a dramatic present, an uncertain future and also to unravel an dark and murky past. This is a book I enjoyed and have no hesitation in recommending to you.

There is also some witty dialogue, edge of the seat tension, quite graphic and chilling moments and a rather entertaining nod to the Hannibal Lecter jail scene in ‘Silence of the Lambs’.

Following on from her debut last year in Nine Elms, she returns in Shadow Sands, once again with her young research assistant Tristan Harper and involves herself in the possible murder of a young man. While out scuba diving with her son at the Shadow Sands reservoir, they discover his mutilated body and after being approached by the boy’s mother to investigate how he drowned, Kate takes a personal interest in the unexplained death. Kate is also still living with her demons and dealing with her subsequent alcohol dependency.

Shadow Sands is actually the second book in the Kate Marshall series. It is a fast paced serial killer thriller that is a tense read that had be gripped from the first page.
Shadow Sands is well written with a plot that moves along at a good pace. There are some really chilling moments in the plot, which had me at the edge of my seat.
I found both the main characters Kate and Tristan to be well developed and found them very realistic. Each have their own problems, and with each other’s support they work well together to overcome these obstacles and build a great bond. Bryndza portrayed their struggle with alcoholism and coming out as gay so well. It was done so sensitively.
This was my first book by Robert Bryndza but I enjoyed it so much that it definitely won’t be the last. I’m planning to listen to the audiobook to the first book Nine Elms soon hopefully, and can’t wait to see what the third book has to offer.

This is the second Kate Marshall book by Robert Bryndza. I haven’t read the first one, but I will now that I’ve read this thoroughly enjoyable take. The author is a talented writer who is able to convey a great sense of atmosphere and menace, leading to a great read.
The characters are well rounded and have a depth that is often lacking in crime thrillers, but definitely not in this one. I found that I really cared about the fate of characters such as Magdalena and I would recommend this book as a fine example of the genre.

Shadow Sands is the second novel to feature Kate Marshall as the main protagonist. The former Detective Constable works as a lecturer in criminology, but crime solving is so deeply embedded that she also works as a private investigator.
Kate’s underwater discovery of a young man’s body leads to a trail of unsolved disappearances centering around the Shadow Sands reservoir. Kate and her young assistant, Tristan, become more personally involved when another lecturer, Magdalena is abducted. The local police do not seem to take the evolving situation seriously enough, so Kate and Tristan dig deeper in their efforts to find the perpetrator of the crimes.
Robert Bryndza can certainly write a good thriller! I found the novel hard to put down as he drew the reader into the twisted mind of the criminal. I thought the character of Kate Marshall was very real; a flawed woman, but one with huge determination and sense of justice. Although this is the second in the series, I think Shadow Sands works as a stand-alone novel – saying that I can’t wait to read Nine Elms, the first Kate Marshall crime novel.
