One Split Second

Carolyn Fraser

A car carrying 5 teenagers crashes. Who was driving? Why did the crash happen? Will the families ever learn the truth?

When a car carrying 5 teenagers, on their way home from a party, crashes the effects on their lives and those of their family and friends will have a wide impact.

Who was driving, why did the car crash, will the families get the answers they desperately want and need?

This novel is written in a really accessible way with each of the characters being allowed a voice. It was so well written and true to life.

As I was reading it, I was able to imagine myself in each of the roles and question how I would react in the same circumstances.

Ultimately this is a story of forgiveness and redemption and I really enjoyed it.

An absolutely fabulous read gripped me from the very first page to the last. Would highly recommend, thoroughly enjoyed it.

Wow-what a novel-such an engrossing piece of writing on a difficult and sensitive subject. I devoured this book in two sittings over 24 hours and really didn't want it to end. The author writes with great lucidity and realism around many issues affecting family life today. Her characters are well-created, extremely credible and you feel genuine empathy for some of the parents and teenagers.

The story revolves around the drastic consequences of a car crash, both for the young adults directly involved and also the effect on their immediate families. It tears apart a close-knit community as answers are sought to impossible questions. What really happened that fateful evening? Do the parents know their children as well as they thought? Are the friendship groups all they seem? As the families wait patiently for answers to their newfound heartache they have time to reflect yet not wanting the world as they know it to be wrong. The characters' personalities are faultlessly drawn by the author to the point where the regret of each family member is palpable. Readers are swept along on a tide of emotions not knowing what the outcome will be and whether fragile relationships can be restored through forgiveness.

l adored this book and will definitely read more of Caroline’s earlier titles. The chapters are quite short as the action moves from one family to another. This just added to the appeal of the book for me.
