The story begins with Emily and her boyfriend Will telling her parents that they are going to be married soon when she is 21. The couple ends up eloping and then travel to America where Will has a scholarship for Harvard.
The story begins with Emily and her boyfriend Will telling her parents that they are going to be married soon when she is 21. The couple ends up eloping and then travel to America where Will has a scholarship for Harvard. We then follow the couple travelling back to England where Will takes up a job in a bank. Emily is left looking after their baby while Will decides that he must leave his job to take his part in the War.
Although the story is mostly centred on Emily and her struggle to cope without Will, we are given a brief insight into what Will did during the war and also events that happened to Richard, their son as he was growing up.
