Foster mother Cathy Glass narrates this uplifting true story of Melody and her sick mother Amanda. The beautifully told story is absorbing and moving in equal measures.
Seasoned foster mother Cathy Glass takes in Melody, the eight-year-old daughter of drug addict and vulnerable mother Amanda. Their relationship is very strong and Melody arrives in care angry about their separation, insisting she can look after her mother herself. She is dirty, has only the clothes she is standing in and her hair is crawling with head lice. She is also very hungry so immediately Cathy and her family work their kind and caring magic, making her feel at home, valued, well-fed and clean.
As the story continues it appears Amanda has moved away when she misses one of her contact times. Melody is upset and worried. Her mother is eventually found, totally lost and confused. She is identified and hospitalised, so Cathy and Melody visit her in the care home, bringing her lovely gifts, an album of photographs and homemade treats.
This is a true story, beautifully written and with some wonderful characters and, although some parts are very sad, ultimately this is an excellent and heartwarming read. I admire Cathy and her family for their selflessness and the way they help damaged children. I feel humbled by their actions.
I was absorbed in the story from the very beginning and highly recommend it. It’s a 4.5* review from me.

Cathy Glass is not only an amazing foster parent but a great story teller too.
Cathy Glass is a seasoned Foster carer and has fostered numerous children through the years so you would think she has seen it all but when she fosters Melody she realises there are still some things she hasn't seen before. Be prepared to go through every emotion when reading this book and have to rethink your ideas of fostering. Cathy and her family are amazing people and even though I have read a few other of Cathy's books she never stops amazing me, the plight of the children is very moving but don't fall into the trap of thinking these books are solemn though as there is so many light hearted moments in it. It was a wonderful read and a definite five starts from me.

I have read all Cathy Glass' books. Each time it has been impossible to put the book down. As a person who struggled to read a full book Cathy's are so easy to read. Her description and the way the books are written are easy to read.
Her latest book Where Has Mummy Gone? covered not only the plight of the many children in care but also covered the destruction that mental health issues bring to everyone involved. As a foster carer myself and a project worker for homeless care leavers with mental health and addiction issues I found this book like all her books insightful and very interesting.
I would advise everyone to read her books, as it will allow people to have more of an idea about the trauma that some kids go through. God bless Cathy she is an angel and her work as a carer and the amazing happy endings for the children she has cared for are to be something for us all to aspire to be. Can't wait for the next book.
Ultimately a feel good story featuring the unsung foster carers society relies on so much but does little to thank. This novel goes a long way to doing that.
Cathy Glass was new to me when I got to review this novel. Where Has Mummy Gone? really had me hooked from the first page. I was a little wary of the subject matter, child neglect doesn't immediately appeal as a subject for a joyful read. How wrong I was. This story does wring the heart strings but is ultimately a story of hope and optimism and left me full of admiration for foster carers. They are largely unsung until a tragedy occurs but this novel makes the reader aware how much as a society we owe to them.
Melody is eight, taken in by Cathy she has been cold, hungry and dirty and is understandably very angry. She also seems to be unduly worried about her mother. As Cathy gains Melody's trust just how much she has been doing for her mother comes to light. Melody blossoms under Cathy's care warm, well fed and attending school. With Cathy's care Melody comes to accept the reality of her mother's situation and is gently prepared for her excepting a for ever home and a new "mummy".
I couldn't put this story down and it stayed with me after the last page.
I would recommend this for any reader who likes true life and for fans of Call the Midwife for that ultimate uplifting feeling.
Marvellous book, left me teary eyed!
Cathy Glass has done it again with this new book, Where has Mummy Gone? Even though I have previous books by her about her fostering I never tire of them. Each child is different, as are their circumstances. I found this book especially poignant as the reason for the mothers problems became clear. Definitely suitable reading for anyone considering fostering.
