I read this book in just a few days. It was completely enthralling.

I read this book in just a few days. It was completely enthralling.

The book starts at the end of the story, which is often difficult for a reader to follow, but this is so well written that the novel flows and is not disjointed. The story is about Francine Day who is a very successful solicitor. However, her career begins to fall apart when she starts a relationship with a client, Martin Joy, who is initiating divorce proceedings against his wife, Donna.

Donna goes missing and Martin is the main suspect. Francine was following him that night without his knowledge but she does not remember anything until she was back at her flat, bloodied and confused. Her neighbour takes her in and helps her, but later uses this to blackmail her.

Martin’s business partner, Alex, and his wife take him in when she is released by the police. Francine turns to her friend Clare who puts her in touch with a colleague to try and remember the evening that Donna disappeared. She also has support from Tom, a colleague form her chambers and as things begin to come clearer Francine is left with two suspects – Martin and Alex. She goes to Martin’s house on the beach and sends texts to both of them-but the person who arrives is not who she expected at all!

My Client, Her Husband, My Lover .......guessing until the end!

I loved this book from start to end. Best I have read in a long time. This told the story of an upcoming Lawyer with a great career ahead of her, in the process of applying for silk. Francine Day is ambitious but lets professionalism slip by getting involved in a tangled web of lust, desire, betrayal and a missing wife, soon to be divorced from her client whom she becomes involved with. The attraction is instant and obsessive. The characters in the book could all be involved but how, when, where? There are a few different storylines which keeps you guessing as to who could be responsible for a suspected murder. There are a few twists which kept me guessing to the end. Everything I love in a book, great characters, a crime, thriller and a twist. I will definitely read more from J L Butler. Recommended.

An ok psychological drama.

This book promises ambition, sex, secrets, lies and obsession... but I don't think it delivers on any! The premise rests on a lawyer (Francine) having an affair with the client (Martin) and then his soon to be ex-wife (Donna) goes missing.

I don't think the characters were well developed, in particular the 'love' between Francine and Martin was not believable.

The mental health aspect was a bit bizarre and felt dropped in (to further the plot).

I did however enjoy the set up of the final scene and felt that was well thought through.
