Nuanced and intriguing, this is a complex story of power, ambition and obsession. Named for the character in Daphne Du Maurier’s Rebecca, Marie Danvers, Danny to her friends, is a streetwise grifter, with an ambiguous history. She inserts herself into the lives of the wealthy as housekeeper to await an opportunity for exploitation.

She seems to find herself drawn in deeper with the rebellious bride-to-be Calista, before finding herself in LA caught in a storm of power, lust and obsession while working for Bebe Patten. There’s a simmering tension that underlies the entire book, suspense as you’re not quite sure what is going to happen next.

The literary nods to Rebecca throughout are a clever way to interweave the two separate narratives, though you don’t need to have read Du Maurier’s work to sink into this story. The power imbalance and co-dependency between Danny and Bebe was intriguing to see unfold, and made for interesting interactions.

Their dynamic is never cut and dry and it makes for a twisting read. Danny is an intriguing, brilliantly crafted main character that could inspire a great deal of discussion. Is she unreliable? Is she out for personal gain only or does she fall into an obsession with her marks against her objectives?

This makes I Am Danvers a multi-layered read that has all the sinister, toxic power of a good suspense.
