English summary: The sixteenth and seventeenth centuries were particularly important for the history of international law. The discovery of the Americas and the religious conflicts in Europe meant that questions of international law were controversially debated. While Roman Catholic participation in the discourse has already been subjected to a great deal of investigation, the Protestant contribution to the origin and differentiation of early modern international law is largely unknown. Michael Becker therefore turns his attention to the works of Protestant theologians, jurists, and other scholars who commented on international law issues. By referring to specific problems posed in the law of war and alliances (offensive and defensive religious wars, inter-confessional alliances) he shows that Protestant scholars also influenced the international law discourse.

Aufgrund der spanischen Expansion in der Neuen Welt und der konfessionellen Konflikte in Europa wurden volkerrechtliche Fragen kontrovers diskutiert. Wahrend der romisch-katholische Anteil des Volkerrechtsdiskurses bereits Gegenstand zahlreicher Untersuchungen wurde, ist der protestantische Beitrag zur Genese und Ausdifferenzierung des fruhneuzeitlichen Volkerrechts weitgehend unbekannt. Michael Becker befasst sich daher mit den Werken protestantischer Theologen, Juristen und anderer Gelehrter, die sich zu Fragen des Volkerrechts geaussert haben. Anhand von spezifischen Problemstellungen aus dem Bereich des Kriegs- und Bundnisrechts (religiose Offensiv- und Verteidigungskriege, Bundnisse zwischen unterschiedlichen Konfessionen) zeigt er, dass protestantische Gelehrte den Volkerrechtsdiskurs mitgepragt haben.
