Top libel and privacy lawyer Louis Charalambous tells the compelling story, as a first generation Cypriot from Hackney, of his adventures over 30 years in the jungle of media law. I was absolutely fascinated, particularly by his background journey into this section of the law, it felt to me as though he has an innate sense of fairness and justice.

While dealing with celebrities, he has also supported others in the spotlight, including investigative journalists, whistleblowers, and innocent people who have been “monstered”. There are 29 chapters focusing on different cases, there are obviously specific areas into which he cannot go, but even then his feelings are clear.

He talks with a clear, no-nonsense, reasoned voice, which ensures it’s a powerful and unputdownable read.

Hearing about cases such as Johnny Depp against the Sun, where his team built up a defence and a win for the newspaper was absolutely enthralling. Media scandals and cover ups can be a messy and expensive business when they go to court and this particular case was no exception. It appears as though fame and fortune have an unfair advantage, with those able to spend fortunes to declare their innocence, including PR and Social Media wars, often coming out on top.

Some of his other headline cases and chapters include two multi-libel claims he took on with a no win no fee arrangement: ‘Robert Murat: ”monstering” the innocent’, and ‘The much-wronged Christopher Jefferies’. In both of these cases the media exposed innocent men as being guilty of crimes (the missing Madeline McCann, and the murder of Joanna Yeates in Bristol).

All of the chapters are absorbing, not only are you in a front row seat, you are also exposed to the behind the scenes work that go into the cases.

With a pithy and credible voice, Better Call Louis is an absolutely riveting memoir detailing some of the biggest media scandals and headline cases in recent history. Highly recommended.
