On an abandoned island in the Outer Hebrides, one man finds a new home and community. Recently separated from his wife, James Stanton is drawn back to the isle of Starra, a remote uninhabited island in the Outer Hebrides with a dubious reputation. Having been captured by the island on his first visit, James buys the island and over the course of moving and building a home there, he becomes part of a helpful and caring community.

‘Starra’ by Michael Jordan is the first book in The Starra Saga trilogy and introduces James, Julia and the people he meets in Lewis. This story is as much a love story about the island and the wilds of Scotland as it is between James and Julia. The setting plays a large part in the storyline, the mercurial weather having a hand in the action and the plot, and the island itself holding secrets and mysteries that make the locals superstitious and attracts unwanted visitors.

Throughout the story James settles into his new home, opens up following the breakdown of his marriage and begins to find happiness in Starra. The storyline feels complete but there’s plenty of different topics to be picked up and explored in future books. I liked the gentle pacing of this book, I thought that the plotline was well-structured and it was easy to immerse yourself in the complications of island life.

I found the characters to be well-rounded and likeable, the story flowed well. ’Starra’ is a contemporary escapist read about new starts that I found wholesome and highly enjoyable.
