It’s Big Little Lies without the glamour but all of the tantrums (and we don’t mean the kids!) centred around Glass Lake Primary School, a small town community in Ireland. The book opens with a mysterious body in the river and the plot heats up from there.
The character driven plot is led by Bev Franklin, the queen bee of the hive. Every school has one. She’s the pushy mum of Amelia and director of the school's musical. She will do whatever it takes for success and woe betide anyone who gets in her way. When a scandal involving her own daughter threatens to derail the annual school musical’s appearance on telly, Bev takes it to another level.
It’s a sharp, funny and oh so relatable tale. Despite the darker moments, I howled through as I remembered similar scenarios through my years of experiencing competitive parenting at the school gates.
Secrets, double standards, scandal, one upmanship, tragedy, skeletons in the closet. And a murder to solve. It’s deliciously entertaining. And I loved it!
