Bahnson was a member of the Moravian community in Salem, North Carolina, and an assistant quartermaster in the Confederate Army. In letters to his father, a Moravian bishop, he discusses some of the best known events of the Civil War. Chapman is his descendent and a director of interpretive programs at Old Salem, Inc.
