"A burnt-out London lawyer finds herself (and some love, too) under the swirling Northern Lights. "
Sometimes you have to leave the big city, and all the stress that goes with it, to find yourself.
In Escape to the Northern Lights by Carrie Walker, Criminal lawyer Sara Pearson’s has a high-stress and high-reward life. To wit: her hourly rate is so high she can buy Jimmy Choos two at a time. But it all comes crashing down after she suffers multiple panic attacks and her doctor signs her off for two months. After seeing her soon-to-be ex-husband on a date, she books herself into the Firefly Forest resort in Norway.
She is bitterly disappointed when she discovers what she thought would be a five-star spa retreat is anything but. The meals are silent. The food is vegan. The wi-fi is spotty (at best). The remote location means she can’t escape as quickly as she would like, so she finds herself reluctantly enjoying it.
Walker transports the reader to this remote corner of Norway, and all the activities that entails. Outdoor swimming. Saunas. Dog-sled rides. Fire walking. Tree hugging. Snowstorms.
The characters are all richly drawn, especially Henrick, who helps run the retreat, and Sara's soon-to-be ex-husband Mark, who is so dastardly he needs a moustache to twirl. Like in her previous two novels, Walker excels as describing Norwegian delicacies on offer, creating a mouth-watering experience.
If you don’t have a month to spend in a Norwegian forest to change your life, you could try to read this book instead.

Packed with humour, romance and a love affair with nature, Escape to the Northern Lights is a story of transformation, second chances and finding home in the most unexpected places.
High-powered lawyer Sara thought she had life figured out - until her whirlwind marriage ends in divorce, her dream promotion slips away and a burnout diagnosis forces her to take a break.
Desperate for a reset, she books a four-week spa retreat in Norway, imagining a luxurious escape. Instead, she finds herself in the rugged wilderness of Firefly Forest, knee-deep in reindeer droppings and stuck with an annoyingly bohemian - and ridiculously attractive - outdoorsman, Henrik.
What starts as a nightmare turns into a journey of self-discovery as Sara swaps designer heels for bare feet, legal briefs for tree-hugging, and fleeting flings for something far deeper...
