In April 1865, the search for Abraham Lincoln’s assassin, John Wilkes Booth, mesmerised a nation. In Manhunt: The 12-day chase for Abraham Lincoln’s Killer, James Swanson shows how Booth was able to evade capture time and again and why he refused to be taken alive. A gripping true tale of murder, intrigue and betrayal as exciting as any thriller.

"The very best history writing has the novelist’s instinct for characterisation, and understands the importance of tiny detail. I am absorbed right now by Manhunt, by James Swanson, as I always am by the latest le Carre novel. The squalid details of John Wilkes Booth's daily life on the run with a broken leg hold the reader firmly, even though we know the ending." New Statesman
“Swanson’s amazing account places you in the room as Lincoln lies dying and carries you across the countryside as Booth escapes. This historical book is almost impossible to put down.” Patricia Cornwell
“It’ll be a rare reader who can put this engrossing book down.” Scotsman
‘Convincing, full of detail and dialogue. Manhunt is an enjoyable, and often exciting, portrayal of what must have been twelve of the most turbulent days in American history.’ Independent on Sunday
