A fascinating story of a smart and truly tireless woman
I don’t know if Clara Colby is well-known in the US but, from a UK perspective, I hadn’t heard of her before I encountered this book. Born in England in 1846, she moved to America as a child. After graduating from university (surely a remarkable thing for the time), she began campaigning for women’s votes in the US and later internationally. Her lecture schedule and the travel this required would be exhausting in our times but, with the additional travel difficulties and burdens of her times, it is truly incredible.
This is a really fascinating story of a smart and tireless woman, with a chaotic personal life, always campaigning for the greater good.
The British woman who helped American women win the vote. This book is the story of Clara Bewick Colby, a leader in the campaign which resulted in American and British women achieving the right to vote. Valedictorian of the first woman’s class at the University of Wisconsin, she became a writer, publisher, teacher and public speaker. She was a close friend of Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who became her mentors. She published The Woman’s Tribune for 26 years, one of the most powerful voices of feminist ideology at that time. Her journey is an epic saga of untiring and heroic endeavour, sometimes under the most adverse circumstances, across the United States, and her native England.
John Holliday grew up in England, where he served in the Royal Air Force and later with IBM. After moving to Canada and initially continuing to work with IBM, John started the first of many businesses, mostly in the IT industry. A subsequent business opportunity resulted in a move to Australia where he continued his entrepreneurial activities. John's interest in writing arose when he decided to write a memoir of his business life, published under the title Toughing it Out: Adventures of a Global Entrepreneur. ISBN 9781475210743. This led to the publication of the biography of an ancestor and then to his current book. John lives with his wife Colleen on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia, with three children and four grandchildren close by.
