At the age of twelve, under the Wind Moon, Will Cooper is given a horse, a key and a map, and sent alone into the Indian Nation to run a trading post as a bound boy. There he grows into a man, learning the resilience needed to build a life and find a home.

In a card game with a plantation owner named Featherstone, Will wins, for a brief moment, a mysterious girl named Claire, whose memory and hold on him endure for years. As his fate becomes entwined with that of the Cherokee people, including Chief Bear, Will learns to survive the challenges of nature and men.

Eventually, Will joins the fight to protect Cherokee land and culture from encroaching forces. As he confronts loss, loyalty and the passage of time, he comes to understand the truth behind his belief that only desire can overcome time itself.
